Job Responsibilities:
- Engage in legal research and prepare memoranda.
- Conduct client intakes and assess their legal needs.
- Draft legal pleadings and prepare for trials.
- Attend client hearings to gain practical courtroom experience.
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners.
- Connect clients with local resources to assist with their legal and personal needs.
- Conduct community outreach to raise awareness about available legal services.
- Participate in virtual and in-person training sessions.
- Meet local judges and attorneys through the Lunch & Learn program.
- Observe court proceedings in both district and federal court settings.
- Attend court diversion programs such as Veterans’ Treatment and Sobriety Courts.
- Take part in social activities organized by staff and fellow students.
Education and Experience Information:
- Open to first- and second-year law students.
- Demonstrated interest in public interest law is required.
- Ability to exhibit initiative, self-motivation, and deductive reasoning is important.
- Basic computer knowledge, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Legal Server skills, is desirable.
- Excellent communication skills are necessary, with a comfort level speaking on the phone or in person with clients.
Salary Information:
- The positions are unpaid. However, the organization will attempt to locate affordable housing solutions for summer law students, though this is not guaranteed.
