Overview:
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is seeking a talented and passionate Legal Fellow to join our Civil Rights Department in the Fall of 2025. This is a rare opportunity to be involved in substantive legal work on a variety of issues that impact the Muslim community, including incarceration rights, federal watch list litigation, workplace discrimination, law enforcement discrimination, and free speech.
Responsibilities:
As a Legal Fellow, you will have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of tasks, including:
- Performing legal research and drafting legal documents, including complaints, motions, and other routine court filings
- Drafting written work product, such as legal and research memorandums, as requested
- Drafting demand letters and engaging in alternative dispute resolution to resolve civil rights cases outside court intervention
- Assisting supervising attorneys with various aspects of litigation, such as client interviews, factual investigation, legal research, discovery, preparation of trial documents, negotiations, trials, and appellate work
- Participating in speaking engagements pertaining to civil rights issues facing the American Muslim community, as requested
- Attending Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminars and staying updated on changes in the law through reading or other means
Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, you must possess the following qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- 0-2 years of experience (recent law school graduates or on track to complete law school before position starting date)
- Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments and meet deadlines; must be able to work well both independently and in a team environment
- Excellent legal research, writing, and oral skills
- No disciplinary actions on record or pending
- Understanding of civil rights issues relating to American Muslims
- Passion for the mission of the Council on American-Islamic Relations
- Ability to communicate in a language other than English is a plus
- Ability to work in a completely remote environment
Salary and Benefits:
- Applicants must receive external fellowship funding to be considered for the position
- CAIR will contribute up to an additional $37,500 over the external funding with the goal of a total combined salary in the range of $60,000-$70,0000 commensurate with experience
