Job Responsibilities:
- Engage in legal research and prepare memoranda to support casework and advocacy efforts.
- Conduct client intakes to gather information and assess legal needs.
- Draft legal pleadings and documents necessary for case preparation.
- Assist in trial preparation by organizing case materials and evidence.
- Attend client hearings to gain practical experience and insight into legal proceedings.
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners to enhance service delivery and client support.
- Connect clients with local resources to address their broader needs beyond legal assistance.
- Participate in community outreach activities to raise awareness about legal services and engage with the community.
Activities and Events:
- Attend both virtual and in-person training sessions to enhance legal knowledge and skills.
- Participate in the Lunch & Learn program to meet and interact with local judges and attorneys.
- Observe court proceedings in district and federal courts to gain firsthand experience of the judicial process.
- Observe court diversion programs, such as Veterans’ Treatment and Sobriety Courts, to understand alternative legal pathways.
- Engage in social activities organized by staff and fellow students to build camaraderie and network within the legal community.
Education and Experience Information:
- Enrollment as a first- or second-year law student.
- Demonstrated interest in public interest law is essential.
- Ability to exhibit initiative, self-motivation, and deductive reasoning.
- Basic computer knowledge, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Legal Server skills, is desirable.
- Strong typing and communication skills, with comfort in speaking on the phone or in person with clients.
Salary Information:
- The position is unpaid; however, the organization will make efforts to locate affordable housing solutions for summer law students, though this is not guaranteed.
