Job Responsibilities:
- Law clerks in the program will be paired with an attorney and assigned various projects, allowing them to gain real-life experience as a public defender.
- Clerks will have direct client contact, conduct discovery review and organization.
- They will research and draft memorandums and motions.
- Certified law students will have the opportunity to make appearances on the record.
- Participants will be mentored by experienced attorneys and will engage in activities such as a mock trial competition.
- Clerks will learn the art of storytelling and engage in a team project.
- They will produce a writing sample and receive one-on-one career guidance counseling.
Education and Experience Information:
- The program is open to law students who are in good academic standing.
- Law School Graduates who are awaiting bar results are eligible for Post-Bar Senior Law Clerk positions.
- Candidates should demonstrate a strong work ethic and maintain the highest ethical standards of confidentiality.
- Applicants should have a strong background in service to their community and understand the mission and objective of the Alternate Public Defender.
Salary Information:
- Post Bar clerks are paid positions, and applicants can apply through the LA County Department of Human Resources.
Additional Program Details:
- The Fall Law Clerk position lasts approximately 12 weeks and is part-time, requiring a minimum of sixteen hours a week. The program runs from August 25 to November 15.
- The Spring program lasts from January 13th, 2025, to April 4, 2025.
- The Summer law clerk position is full-time, 40 hours a week, lasting approximately 10 weeks, beginning on May 27th, 2025.
- The program is small and highly competitive, accepting applications from October 1st through March 31st or until positions are filled.
