Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on various public interest law topics.
- Assist in client intakes by gathering pertinent information and understanding their legal needs.
- Draft legal pleadings and documents under the supervision of experienced attorneys.
- Prepare for trial by organizing documents, evidence, and other necessary materials.
- Attend and observe client hearings to gain practical courtroom experience.
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners to support client needs.
- Connect clients with local resources and services to address their legal issues.
- Engage in community outreach to raise awareness about legal services and support available.
- Participate in virtual and in-person training sessions to enhance legal knowledge and skills.
- Attend Lunch & Learn programs to meet and interact with local judges and attorneys.
- Observe court proceedings in district and federal courts to understand legal processes.
- Observe specialized court diversion programs such as Veterans’ Treatment and Sobriety Courts.
- Participate in social activities organized by staff and students to foster a collaborative environment.
Education and Experience Information:
- The program is designed for first- and second-year law students.
- Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in public interest law.
- The ability to exhibit initiative, self-motivation, and deductive reasoning is required.
- Basic computer knowledge, particularly in Microsoft Office and Legal Server, is desirable.
- Typing skills and excellent communication skills are necessary.
- Comfort in speaking on the phone or in person with clients is important.
Salary Information:
- The summer positions are unpaid.
- The organization will attempt to assist in locating affordable housing solutions for summer law students, although this is not guaranteed.
