This how my conversation shook out:
With the cancellation of the upcoming DAP boards, I wanted to know whether there were any waivers available for age because I turn 35 later this year. I called the JAG-USAF number and spoke with a captain in the office. She gave me 2 pieces of information:
1. Age waivers are available, and
2. There were none selected from the February DAP board due to unforeseen force manning issues.
The February DAP board was retroactively canceled.

Wow!!! That is nuts! I feel bad for anyone that went through the application process for February. What specifically did you find out about the age waivers, if you don't mind me asking?FMajor wrote:http://www.airforceots.com/portal/modul ... &start=210

Because the accepted guys had to decide by yesterday, they had said that there will definitely be alternates (not sure how many) - and that they will be notified by today.m4g1c0ff3 wrote:Are we supposed to hear back from them today? Selected as an alternate for Navy, but I think we were supposed to hear by today for Navy alternates. I was amazed Navy only gave a few days for the accepted interns to decide.
Navy has been late before though, but I think we can count on this. Here's to hoping.

It does not say that we will be hearing from them today absolutely. I would imagine there is alot of paperwork and what not to deal with before they send out alternate offers. It just seems a little premature to expect them to send them out today. I still think we wont hear from them until next week. But i have been wrong before.

From a separate message from an e-mail I had sent Monday:
"We are going to start calling alternates today as students accept and reject the offer. By Friday of this week, all alternates will be notified if there is a position for them to fill."

I just got an e-mail from the SJA I was scheduled to interview with in May for the June board that it had been canceled. Basically confirmed the information posted here above. Oh well.

Hi,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I have a few questions.
Can anyone explain the process of the Navy DAP Board? I heard that they are scheduled to meet next friday, the 25th. If this is true, why does it take so long to get the results back? Do they meet more than once? If anyone could shed some light on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I saw someone asking a similar question, but regarding uploading new documents after you go to the interview.....do I need to contact anyone to let them know I have done so? I'm not sure if my previous document that I submitted was already printed out and put in the file (as a previous person mentioned). To clarify, I want to make sure my new, updated document will be viewed.

Where did you hear about the Navy board meeting next week? For the fall board, it took them a little over 5 weeks to post results, so not as bad as the advertised 8 weeks. If they follow the same time line for this board, results should be posted on Monday April 25th.matmic wrote:Hi,

As for uploading documents, I think that as long as you uploaded them before the deadline, you're fine. When you had your interview shouldn't matter.

Looks like AF DAP age waivers may be available if you turn 35 sometime before the October 2011 board. Give them a call for the official answer.

Just went "pending board decision" as well for the army 1l internship.
They say decisions will be made around april 15. im curious to see what happens. I feel like even getting wait-listed as a 1l is kind of a big deal considering how selective they are.

It's listed on the 25th as AJAG (although I am uncertain if this is the same board, so I could be mistaken). Is there another way we could find out when they plan to meet?

Everyone waiting on boards:
I understand your anxiety, given how incredible an opportunity JAG is, the economy, and other such factors. However, as someone that has waited for 6+ JAG boards, allow me to give some unsolicited advice: Stop trying to figure out when boards meet. And unless you actually have insider information, you should probably stop trying to figure out when results will be out. With selection rates closer to 0% than 10%, you should just keep going on with your lives, because chances are once the results are out, you'll be going on with your normal life anyway.
Check the site often if you're really worked up about it, but remember that this is a public forum. ANYONE can post on it, meaning you should be careful what you believe. If the Navy's deadline was 3/18 and they say results will be out 4-8 weeks, at least settle down for the first 4 weeks.
This wasn't directed at anyone. It honestly is just advice coming from someone that put too many emotional eggs in past JAG board baskets. The more you focus on board results, the harder it will be to concentrate on the other stuff you need to be doing.
4% (or 0% for Air Force) is pretty dang low. Your expectations should probably be 96% lower than they are (or theoretically 96% of us should have no expectations, but I digress).
Carry on.

For me, personally, knowing when the board meets actually gives me less anxiety. However, I get where you're coming from and appreciate the advice, but I also don't see any problem with trying to figure out when the results will be out. Being new to the process, I'm just trying to find out as much information as possible.SocalPizza wrote:Everyone waiting on boards:

No need to try to damper people's spirits. Most people who apply know the statistics. Those of us who are new to the process are likely more excited, than anxious.

JARO posted an update on Friday, March 18th: "The deadline for the Spring Applications for Active Duty and 1L internships has passed. Results will be posted about Mid-Late April."
So I guess April 1st (about same time as last year) was being too optimistic. Would be a nice surprise though.

I'm interested in being Marine JAG, a few questions
1) I've seen people in this thread say that you might not practice law at all during your commission, how can this be? I mean the JAG part of the marine website depicts law as a pretty central part of being a Marine JAG
2)Considering my first question, are exit opportunities from the Marine JAG as good as the other branches? I'd like to have a chance to work for the USAO

I'm not a Marine JA, but I can tell you that in the Marine Corps, Judge Advocates are unrestricted line officers. Regardless of what anyone else's experience in the past may have been, you have no guarantees for the future. You are 100% available to lead troops into battle.adil91 wrote:I'm interested in being Marine JAG, a few questions

As I understand it, that's not what has happened in the past with most JA's. But you should know before applying that there are no guarantees to do legal work, regardless of what your recruiter may tell you (and what others' experiences may have been).

I'm perfectly fine with that possibility, one of the reasons I'm interested in the Marines, but some of the replies here make it seem like its a very good possibility that a JAG does nothing but lead troops and that not seeing the inside of a courtroom at all is a very strong possibility.

I can't really tell you what's going on right now for Marine JA's. I doubt that they're forced to do much non-legal work in their first contract. But I'll wait until someone with more knowledge of current JA assignments comes along.adil91 wrote:I'm perfectly fine with that possibility, one of the reasons I'm interested in the Marines, but some of the replies here make it seem like its a very good possibility that a JAG does nothing but lead troops and that not seeing the inside of a courtroom at all is a very strong possibility.

I'm going to weigh in even though I normally only do so when I have 100% confidence/personal experience. That's not the case here, but I've seen this sentiment enough recently I feel compelled to give my 1/50th of a dollar.SocalPizza wrote:I'm not a Marine JA, but I can tell you that in the Marine Corps, Judge Advocates are unrestricted line officers. Yes, it is true every Marine goes through TBS and the Marine ethos is "Every Marine is a Rifleman." However, that does not mean that you will not be serving in your MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). What it means is that those Marine JAGs assigned to operational commanders, by the nature of the size of Marine operations, may be closer to the front than the JAGs of other services. The JAG needs to be a Rifleman just in case things go to he** in a hand-basket and he/she needs to take command of a squad/platoon.
In routine assignment policy-- yes even wartime assignment policy-- the Corps needs its JAGs fulfilling their MOS-- especially in a first tour. It's just too darned inefficient and too expensive to do otherwise. (Note: This doesn't mean you'll necessarily be in a Legal Services Office doing Court Martial defense, etc. The concept of filling the MOS may be somewhat broad.) As an unrestricted line officer, you will be expected to do other things eventually (e.g., attend War College), but that's a way down the road.
Is this a guarantee? No. There are no guarantees. However, I'd hate to see someone who really wants to serve as a JAG in the USMC hesitate because of rumors about having to go be an infantry officer for a few years.

Re: Military Law
I suppose there are separate reasons why a JAG bound law student would want to complete non-law related combat/officer training for close to year before he or she gets any Military Law training, but isn't the chance of being an infantry officer the reason why many people want to serve in the USMC anyways? However, I'd hate to see someone who really wants to serve as a JAG in the USMC hesitate because of rumors about having to go be an infantry officer for a few years.
