3.8/169 chances..

Post by BloodandThunder » Wed Jan 27, 2010 6:09 pm

I am submitting applications today to the following schools:

University of Colorado (I live in Denver)
Notre Dame
University of Illinois
Vanderbilt
Duke
University of Minnesota
University of Texas

(also: finance undergrad, 3 solid letters of rec, good softs, no urm)

I know I'm applying very late in the cycle, but does anyone have any idea what my odds are? I've looked at all kind of predictors/historical admits, but any personal feedback would be great. thanks!

Unless some of those plan on YPing you, I'd expect to get into all except perhaps Duke or -possibly- Texas. Certainly worth applying to all of them.

What about USC UCLA? You will definitely get in there too... Berkeley too.

You should shoot higher. UVA, Michigan, NYU, Georgetown.

I've thought about both, just not terribly interested in living in LA. I've got a waiver from UCLA, couldn't hurt to apply and see if I change my mind later on.

(btw, I'm still pretty new around these parts, what does 'yp' stand for?)

I've been scared of applying much higher because of what I've read concerning late cycle applications. Does that really matter all that much?

yp=yield protection

basically if your numbers are way above 75%ile, a school could WL you or something because they know they are your safety school and they want to keep their yield % as high as possible.

also, to respond to your post, i'd try uva or georgetown also because from what i understand both have dropped the deadlines for their ED programs, so you would still probably have a shot at either if you were 100% willing to commit to one or the other

You're aiming too low. You have great chances at Cornell, Georgetown, Duke, Michigan, and Berkeley.

Need more T14s. With your high GPA, you could have a chance at the California schools Berkeley, USC, UCLA. I would think you'd apply to everything between T5 and T20 with a decent chance.

Disagree with folks who say apply to UVA, you're below both medians, you're auto-WL/reject. Probably out at Michigan also.

However, Cornell, Duke, and GULC are reasonable. Here's the full list I'd recommend for you:

Cornell
Duke
GULC
UT-Austin
UCLA
Vandy
USC
WUSTL
ND
Illinois

You could also add BC/BU if you wanted to attend either of those. You can drop any schools in places you wouldn't want to live and add those (assuming you would want to live in Boston for 3 years).

Certainly out at UVA, but out at Michigan with a median LSAT and almost 75th percentile GPA (3.55/3.70/3.84)?

Also my exact stats.

You're aiming too low. Applying this late in the cycle isn't going to help you, you're right, but it's definitely worth a shot to aim a little higher, if you can afford to throw in more apps.

(Echoing the "out at UVA" sentiment-- they have a pretty hard wall at 170.)
