Post by Anonymous User » Thu May 28, 2020 3:22 pm

Can anyone speak to clerkship bonus policies or details at the following firms:

1. Ballard Spahr
2. Manatt
3. Davis Wright Tremaine
4. Loeb & Loeb
5. Fox Rothschild
6. Sheppard Mullin

Interested in bonus amount for a district court clerkship and bonus amount (if any) for a magistrate clerkship.

Ballard Spahr has theirs on NALP:

$40,000 – Federal Court of Appeals
$25,000 – Federal District Court
$10,000 – Highest State Appellate Court
$50,000 – 2+ years of federal court clerkships (at least 1 year each at a district court and a court of appeals)

Pretty sure Fox Rothschild doesn't do clerkship bonuses. Can't speak to the others.

I’m curious how to figure this out for regional markets. For us small fries outside of the big cities with flyover clerkships (think Midwest), it’s all shrouded in mystery. Anyone have any insight?

Not many firms in the Midwest outside of Chicago give clerkship bonuses. Robins Kaplan gives $100k ones and is a notable exception. Jones Day is another obviously. Eimer Stahl has a very small Madison office and has above-market clerkship bonuses as well. NALP lists whether firms give one at all and is worth looking at as a starting point.

Thanks, I’ll give it a look. I think Jones Day is about the largest one near me that would offer anything for D.Ct.

Hold up—Robins Kaplan gives $100k clerkship bonuses?

Are there other national plaintiffs shops on that level? Besides the Susman and Keker types, I’m thinking more the securities litigation and mass tort firms.

My impression was that their clerkship bonuses were typically smaller than big law’s.

It's a pretty new thing: https://www.robinskaplan.com/resources/ ... lerk-bonus

Before this year, I don't think they gave clerkship bonuses at all.

For what it's worth if you're a clerk applying in Minneapolis, you'll likely still make more money at Jones Day if you're planning on staying a bit, as it has an above-local-market base and a clerkship bonus. Robins Kaplan also has a reputation for being brutal on associates by Minneapolis standards. That Jones Day office isn't very big though and I assume partnership prospects and such are impacted by being a satellite.

Do Cravath and Wachtell Lipton give clerkship bonuses to associates who take a year or two off as clerks and then return? (My two sons want to know.)

yeah of course. don't know of a firm that does not do this. caveat here being that there are often clauses about you getting no bonus if you have already gotten a bonus before.
