I had a successful phone interview. I wore a suit to feel more professional. Make sure you're in a quiet environment with quality service signal. Additionally, I found standing up really helped and make sure you smile because it comes across. But definitely do your best to avoid talking over them, i.e. have an extra second delay after their question to make sure they're done.

They're my second choice firm - and the rest of my top 5 already dinged me.

In my case, I didn't need to drive the conversation forward, but, be prepared to do so anyway. Awkward silences are worse on the phone than in person

Just pulled a V50 interview in NYC after following up this morning. I really needed that today.

Rejection 2 days after the interview. Skype interview - I knew it wasn't going to go well when I answered the call and could only see the bottom half of his head.

Yep, had a skype interview last week, connection went bad throughout. They said it was fine. I knew it was not. I was dinged three days later. FML

I agree that they don't "help" as much as I'd like but our job is to be proactive. For example, I applied to a 2L SA on Symplicity not too long ago and asked my CSO if she was familiar with the firm. she said yes and I asked her to reach out to the firm's recruiter on my behalf ... she sent an email stating that I was well-rounded blah blah blah that day. Will it help? Who knows.... But I at least know that probably nobody had the CSO email the firm recruiter for them...CSO is just one more job searching tool at your disposal. Also, sometimes firms email CSO and want a handful of resumes and if you make the connection with CSO's then you may have your résumé passed along because they will know who you are.

Note: I am still searching with everyone here too... Just saying we have to be resourceful about our job search... Most of my stuff does not involve CSO but every now and then I use them to help me.

I don't even know where to apply anymore. I have applied to over 300 firms. I have netted a total of three interviews. Dinged from two and awaiting to hear back from one.

At least you landed interviews. I have nothing but rejections and cricketts after ~250 tailored applications.

Some CSO are useless. I asked mine what they could do to help and if they ever got contacted by firms looking for resumes and if so if they would consider forwarding mine. They referred me to Symplicity. Not all CSO are useful and some give actively bad advice (mine).

Follow up! Tell the biggest, most targeted market(s) that you will be in town and if they offer you a cb pay for it. That helped me get a lot of interviews.

I understand that. I just don't think it hurts to be friendly with them (and if you know they give bad advice, just double check what they say elsewhere), and some are helpful. There are some things you can only get through them (such as employers asking for resumes but not posting on symplicity or certain connections).

I am anonymous because it would be pretty easy to piece together who I am from my posts. While going through the job search, I'd really rather avoid it. I was actually able to figure out from just anonymous posts in one thread that the poster of a number of them was someone I know at school. I would rather not have that happen, particularly when you can link my posts together through my username, and particularly since that would "out" my position and methods in some cases. Maybe some people care less about this, but I'd really like to avoid it.

I have no idea how good or bad mine is, but I've just been sending an email on the same email chain (with original attachments). I think it's more important just to get in front of them again than to say anything meaningful, because I have nothing to update. The email essentially says that I know they are busy but want to restate my interest and check in on my application. It's all of two sentences long.

I've received some bites back from it, so I think it at least isn't hurting me! I've also been waiting longer than 1-2 weeks to follow up. I think the quickest I've followed up was 2.5 weeks.

I only got two callbacks out of OCI, a V100 and a V60. After the V60 rejected me post callback I went to career services and they managed to get me a V30 callback in New York. Just be specific about what you want. One person in the office was useless and told me to start looking for jobs in places I had never been and would never want to work, but I just told someone else "I want to be in New York" and she said 'ok lets see what we can do'. Still no offers yet but career services is definitely helping. Try and utilize them.

At my OCS, the three times I came in, regardless of the question, they'd ask for my résumé (even when completely irrelevant to my question), then would make the same pointless comment, and basically only talk about that until my time was up, without actually addressing the question.


Before anyone says otherwise, yes, the comment is completely irrelevant for me. They wanted me to add the months for each work experience (I'm a non-trad with over a decade of employment history)
