3.17/178 - T14? LSN is all over the place.

Post by gymnastsplits » Fri Jan 12, 2018 7:07 pm

Hi everyone, I'm curious to know if anyone has thoughts on my case. LSN and the other number trackers (hourumd, etc.) are all over the place, partly due to a dearth of information. I've found few splitters as extreme as me...

Stats:
LSDAS GPA is 3.17 - I retook failed classes; university GPA is 3.4. I had pretty severe/untreated health issues throughout college (blackouts, fatigue, nausea) and wrote an addendum, including a signed doctor's note. I'm not confident this makes a huge difference though, as I assume the ABA doesn't allow footnotes when schools submit their own class stats.
Top 5 public university
178 LSAT (no retakes)
Non-URM
3 years of work experience in tech, working in business/analytics departments
No law work experience

I've gotten CRS/merit fee waivers from about half of the T14, but I know that doesn't mean much. With my GPA I know I'll need a stellar PS and softs, but I'm curious what exactly "stellar softs" are - is it work experience? extracurriculars?

I'm guessing that I'll be dinged at the more "academic" schools that seem to heavily weight GPA i.e. Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Berkeley, but I'm not sure about the others.

Stellar softs can be either of those things or more. They just have to be stellar.

You're an extreme splitter. Beyond the analysis you already gave and the research you've done, there isn't much else to say. Apply widely. Nice job on the LSAT!

I would add Harvard to the list you’re likely to get dinged at, but you should have reasonable odds at the rest of the t13

Don't be cheap; apply to the whole T13.

For what this is worth, I know a girl who had a 3.2 and a 173 and was accepted to Yale (sticker) last year. She was denied at every other T-14. Her softs were similar to yours but she is Hispanic.

You already know to apply broadly - the only thing I'd add is to make sure you have a strong "Why X" essay for the schools that like them (such as UVA). Also, in your addendum make sure you discuss the extent to which your medical issues are under control - adcoms might be worried about a relapse.

Thanks floatie! This was one of my biggest worries and I *think* I made it clear in my addendum that I'm being treated and feel so much better now, and used my 178 as an example of how I've rebounded.
