178 LSAT/2.75 gpa

Post by lawapplicant2017 » Tue May 17, 2016 8:17 am

My goal is corporate law in NY.

My LSAT is 178 and my LSAC gpa is 2.75. I have a strong reason for the lower gpa, and have a 2 year upward trend of near a 4.0

I went to law school predictor just now and it says with these stats that: Strong considers are - Cornell, Considers are - Georgetown, Northwestern, U of Michigan, UPenn, UVA, and weak considers are - Duke and NYU

I dont necessarily believe all the results that the predictor yields, because I know NYU and Duke have gpa floors.

However, taking it with a grain of salt, made me hopeful that perhaps Top 14 could still be a possibility with the 2.75/178

Also, I am planning on applying the Fall of 2017, and I know law school applications have been down the past couple of years, but it seems I read somewhere once that prior to 2010, that applicants with my numbers had difficulty breaking the top 14, so it made me wonder, do you think with my stats and given Ill be applying Fall of 2017, that Top 14 will be possible for me? Or could it be difficult as applications may go up again like in years prior? I would appreciate any help or insights.

It's possible but whether you get money or not is a different story. If there's a coherent reason for the low GPA, maybe even write an addendum. Blanket the T14, as well as some schools outside the T14 to see what you get.

It sounds like you're planning to apply right out of undergrad. I think having 2+ years of successful WE would go a long way toward mitigating your GPA.

Although it's true that some schools have GPA floors, you never really know. Apply widely and you might be surprised.

Northwestern and Virginia are probably your best bets since they're known to be splitter friendly, but I think you've got a shot at all of those schools with a 178.

Also--don't worry about how competitive the cycle will be in a year or two. That's something that's completely out of your control. What you do know is that your 178 will be in high demand by top schools regardless of how many applicants there are. I applied with a 2.9/170 back when admissions was very competitive (pre-2010) and still got into NU.

Thanks everyone, for all your help. I appreciate it immensely. One more thing -- With a 2.75/178 LSAT, if I were to early decision at UVA, Northwestern or Georgetown, would that make much of a difference? Also, is it possible if you blanket all the Top 14 (except HYS) that you could be rejected from all with my stats?

The only one that would make sense to ED at is Northwestern because their ED comes with a 150K scholarship. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend locking yourself in with an ED at the other schools

Of course it's possible you'll be rejected at every school in the T14. Assuming you submit a polished and error-free application, across-the-board rejections are unlikely. But you have a 2.75 GPA and no work experience. You shouldn't take anything for granted.

Fordham for free could make sense if you're 100% set on NYC corporate. You could get UVA or NYU but, as someone who has the job you want, 250-300K is too much debt for the (admittedly high) chance at an unknown job, in an unpredictable market, years down the road.
