NU ED Chances?

Post by karmstrong92 » Sat Feb 13, 2016 10:41 pm

3.172 GPA, 178 GPA - Basically I am a super splitter. 1 year of work experience.

If not ED, what are my chances of getting any $$$ from NU. Will I have to go sticker, should I even get in?

Super splitter is understating it. Not a ton of depth in available data resources, but I think you have a good shot at getting in ED at NU. They took at 3.0/176 previously.

What's going on with your GPA? If you were a STEM major, I would definitely apply widely. I could see many t-14s willing to look the other way on your GPA to grab a 178. That being said, NU for nearly free is an excellent outcome.

In all honesty, I had some mental health issues that affected my GPA. However, I will not be detailing this in my application to NU or any other school because I do not want to sound like I am making excuses. At this point I've accepted that my GPA is what it is.

I am probably going to apply to the lower T-14, like NU, GULC, and then some T-20's like WUSTL. What do you think my chances are getting any $$$ from NU? Or would I most likely be looking at sticker if I were to be admitted?

I hear what you're saying and obviously, I have no idea of the details of your prior issues, but people submit addenda to explain their GPAs all the time. Honestly, your profile screams for one. Scoring a 178 on the LSAT is no small feat and you never know how much difference a brief explanation could make to an adcomm. But, as I said, you know better than anyone, so consider it dropped from this point forward.

Again, I'm speaking from very limited data, but it looks like you'd be facing sticker at Northwestern, but I just can't confidently reason through a 178, so I don't know if they would pay for it beyond what they would do in an ED situation. I know Michigan did give $90k for a 3.1/171, but they might have been a MI resident. I'm sure others out there have better thoughts/experiences/info.

I'd at the very least make sure I applied to Michigan as well.

Now that I am reading your comment about GPA Addenda I will think again about whether I want to include. I just thought that most people only submit those if they have really abnormal situational factors (i.e. a family member was ill, that type of thing). I see that I am wrong about that. After receiving therapy for my issues, I went to get a 4.0 during my final semester in college, so a bit of explaining might help. I'm looking on mylsn and I'm seeing that some splitters have received $$$, so *sigh* it's frustrating since I don't really know what will happen with my app.

Do you think my 1 year of WE (as opposed to the 2 year threshold that NU has) will hurt me? I'm nervous about that as well.

And yes, I am planning to apply to Michigan (forgot to include that in my earlier comment). I'm midwest born & raised, so I will be applying to any Top School in the Midwest that I believe have a shot at.

The 1 year of WE is definitely less than ideal for NU, so I would anticipate that and do whatever I could to emphasize your maturity and the complexity of things you dealt with in your job.

I'd say make your best efforts to present yourself as well and possible and be ready for anything. I think you'll get a great outcome, I just can't predict with any certainty which exact outcome that will be.

OP I PM'd you.

This thread confuses me. There's so much talk like "yes you'll get ED" then later "prob at sticker".
