Why not just ask to have your ed app moved to rd? You'll get in with money

Just want to vent - I really don't like that someone well-off enough to accept sticker will also get a urm boost.

Are you open to sitting out a year?

Yes, this is a possibility. However, I was under the impression that you could not do this under Virginia's Binding Expedited agreement. I.e., I know that you can receive a deferral, but is that deferral not then just as binding that you commit to UVA for the Class of 2020?Clearly wrote:Are you open to sitting out a year?

You don't have to defer if you're accepted. You can just tell them you decided you're not going to law school this year. Apply from scratch next fall.cremefraiche wrote:Yes, this is a possibility. Edit: I actually don't know the mechanics of UVAs ed program, but that's how other schools' ed works

Yeah check that out, I am extremely skeptical of an ED contract mandating you attend school that year...You just can't accept anywhere else usually
Anyway you're almost certainly going to have to sit out if you want any money, you have 0 leverage. You can try saying you're going to sit out if they don't play ball, but still no real incentive to negotiate because they'll just negotiate next year when you reapply anyway. You really shouldn't have EDd.

Couple things-I think you need to stop being fixated on one school. You seem to think some stuff that doesn't matter actually does (letters of rec, litigation clinics, clerkship percentages). Realize that it's all just a numbers game- GPA, LSAT, and in your case, URM status. You should apply widely and negotiate heavily, especially if you care about money. Going to a T14 in the area you ultimately want to practice in is good, but there are other considerations (and Duke exists too). Anyway, a URM with your numbers shouldn't lock themselves into ED, especially if they want money.
Finally, definitely retake.

Given that 1) you're willing to take a year off (although UVA ED can prevent you from attending another school next fall, they can't force you to go to UVA), 2) a 3.8/166 could have netted an RD acceptance had you applied early enough (even for a non-URM), and 3) you're URM, the obvious answer is that you should take a year off and reapply during the next cycle.
You could retake and, even with a modest score increase, lock down a full ride to UVA and/or an HYS acceptance. Even if you don't retake you'd likely see some non-trivial amount of scholarship given those numbers and URM.
Despite your ability to pay for sticker, it would be wise to reapply and pick up scholarship that will be available (even the rich like free money).

If your a URM considering applying next year, I'd be a little concerned regarding the possibility of the URM boost being eliminated next cycle do the upcoming supreme court decision next June, which might eliminate AA. Might be something you want to considerdeant286 wrote:Given that 1) you're willing to take a year off (although UVA ED can prevent you from attending another school next fall, they can't force you to go to UVA), 2) a 3.8/166 could have netted an RD acceptance had you applied early enough (even for a non-URM), and 3) you're URM, the obvious answer is that you should take a year off and reapply during the next cycle.
