3.99, 163--splitter? Forum

Hey everyone, I'd appreciate any thoughts about my chances with these stats!

The 3.99 is LSAC's calculation of my GPA. I was disappointed by my LSAT score of 163 in June (after averaging 165 on PTs), and I was averaging 168 on PTs before the October test...and got a 162. I'm really bummed, but I don't have the time or money to retake. I do have very good softs and LORs.

Do these stats make me a splitter? And what are my chances at T-14 schools? I'm particularly interested in UMichigan, University of Virginia, and Stanford.

T14 chance are not good. Retake. That gpa is too good to waste. Even a 165 will open up the lower T14. 170 will open up all but HYS. And 172 appears to make H a lock. If you don't bump up in Dec then take again in June and wait a cycle. I guarantee it'll be worth your while. Good luck!

Thank you for the reply! I honestly don't think I will improve with retake, and I don't want to waste more time and money on the LSAT. I don't think my LSAT score is low enough to warrant an addendum, but I wish there were some other way to make up for it.

This is a slight digression, but is there somewhere to go to see the weight a school assigns gpa and lsat? This would help you make your decision on where to apply, if it exists?

Don't want to waste a few months of time or a few hundred dollars improving on the LSAT ... Do want to waste 3 years and $200,000+ on law school (non T-14 most likely)

I appreciate the polite response. Here's the thing, I already retook and invested hundreds of dollars on books and countless hours studying. Not everybody can get over 170.

I'm also looking at several non-T14 schools, just wanted some advice about T14!

If you don't have the time or money for a retake, you should honestly consider not going to law school. This isn't a "LOL RETAKE OR DON'T GO" post, this is just a don't go post. Law school is ridiculously time-intensive and expensive. The LSAT is not time-intensive, and costs like $150~ to take. If you do not improve at all from here until next June and ended up with a 168 (which was your PT average going into October), you go from squeezing into UVA ED at sticker to multiple high-dollar scholarship offers throughout the T14.

But the thing is, you're already well-aware that you can't take the time or money to retake for a $200,000-$300,000 financial benefit. If your time and $150 sitting fee are that valuable, then there's no way you should go to law school, period.

Man, I had literally the same numbers last year: you NEED to RETAKE. I went from 163 to 168 this October and even though it's not exceptional, I went from barely getting into a T20 to possibly looking at some decent money throughout the T14. You must retake, there is no other way about it and you still have December so you could still apply this cycle. Definitely retake

OP, I am a current 1L and ended up with a decent outcome at a decent school, but when I posted about my numbers three years ago asking the same question, EVERYONE told me to retake. I honestly consider not listening to their advice the biggest mistake of my life. Seriously. I'm not being overly dramatic (I haven't had that difficult of a life haha). But if there is one thing I could do differently, I would go back and make the relatively minor investment to improve my LSAT. You said "not everyone can get 170," but that's not true. Anyone can. (okay not "anyone" but you know what I mean. If you pursue law school, the LSAT will be the easiest test you take in a long while.
