Thanks!

Lets say hypothetically a family member is partner at STL Biglaw firm. If I land somewhere near middle of the pack in grades at Wash U would that be enough to make STL Biglaw? Never really had an answer to that question.

STL is really insular. I haven't tried the market yet, but anecdotally, you're certainly in a much better position than someone at median from another city trying to get STL biglaw. I would think you have some shot -- better if you have good work experience and are a good "fit" with the firm. Depends on the influence of your family member, too. There are plenty of partners with no influence in firms, and there are some that have considerable influence.

If you're looking for someone to tell you that you have a great shot at STL biglaw at median with a family member being partner at a firm, you won't (shouldn't) get that here.

Median won't get you biglaw in STL. period.

I know you're looking for some sort of parachute or safety net (I was the same way) but you're going to try your hardest your 1L year anyway, so that shouldn't really matter.

Like the above poster said, it partly depends on the kind of seniority the partner has at the firm, but unless he/she is the presiding partner, they'll stilll have to pitch you to the rest of the recruiting committee, and I'm sure they'll be very conscious of the fact that the committee knows your relative may have ulterior motives. Keep in mind, your relative may have your best interests at heart, but all the firm cares about is making money.

That being said, if you're in the running (say at least top 1/3) then your relative being a partner really helps and can push you over the top-at the very least you don't have to prove ties.

STL is a great place to work though, and I'm sure you'll do well this semester and land a job at a biglaw firm. Just not as median.

Good luck!

Yea I was referring to Sublime's point- rent is STL is dirt cheap, the firms still pay you well, and you'll get out MUCH earlier than you would at a NY bigfirm. It all depends on how you view STL v. NYC. OP is ostensibly from STL, so I assume his picture of STL is not as bleak as yours
