174/3.9 at a top 20 school. What are my chances of getting a full ride at Top 10 law schools?

Post by rachelql » Sat Jul 11, 2015 7:04 am

Basically what I am asking in the topic.
Also, I wonder if being a Chinese student would hurt my chances.
Any comment or rec for scholarship program would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!! :D

No shot. You might get some money at Vandy or WUSTL, but I wouldn't count on it.

Retake.

Also, I was wondering if you know anything about the scholarships NYU provides.
Thank you!

I think you can get a full ride from top 10, and very likely a HYS acceptance.

Scholarships are hard to predict, especially full rides.

Your numbers put you in the running for full rides at every school in the country that offers them. Craft a good application and see what happens. You'll do well.

Does Northwestern still do early-decision full rides? If so, take a shot at that. Otherwise, you are golden at top 4-10, and a chance at HYS

No, that's bad advice in this case.

Ok thanks! I know this is a bit of an irresponsible question, but do you think I'd have a shot at the NYU full rides?

Your numbers--174 LSAT & 3.9 GPA--suggest that you have a strong chance of being admitted to every T-14 law school if admission was based upon numbers alone. You should get serious scholarship consideration & generous offers from Chicago, Columbia, NYU, Penn, Northwestern, Virginia, Michigan, Duke, Cornell & Georgetown. Harvard, Yale & Stanford offer need based financial aid.

Applying early decision to Northwestern should yield a full tuition scholarship option & is a reasonable option for one targeting Chicago law firms. Your numbers could also yield full tuition scholarship offers from the Univ. of Chicago, Columbia & NYU (but NYU may require public service type essays & a stated commitment to public interest work after law school, although I am not certain about this.)

Additionally, being a Chinese student & of Chinese descent, unlike many undergraduate schools, may actually enhance your chances for admission among top law schools.

P.S. Are you willing to share your undergraduate school via PM ?

Maybe... But you'd have to say more about your background.

Why specifically Chinese? Or did you mean asian in general?

This was in response to the original post in this thread (OP is a Chinese student).

Just to clarify a common misconception: the Northwestern ED scholarship is NOT a full ride.

It's $150k. That's alot, but with the way tuition costs have been going, you could easily end up paying 30-40k in tuition with that scholarship.

That's why it's a bad idea for op to ED nu. He/she could very well end up with a ruby or darrow anyway, which are more valuable scholarships and don't require a binding application.

@Mack: Are you suggesting that Chinese students are over-represented in US law schools ?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
