3.72, 173, weak softs

Post by 0regonian » Tue Jul 07, 2015 5:49 pm

I've been out of school four years, and apart from a magazine internship and a half-dozen published freelance pieces, my resume consists entirely of grocery work. I have a contact at the local US Attorney's office, and hope to take on some volunteer work there in the near future, but that obviously won't be much to put on applications that go out in two months.

It seems like this board likes to pooh-poohs softs, but how far can I take that? I was hoping to get decent $$ from UCLA/USC/UW, with an outside angle at Berkeley, NYU or the Northwestern ED. Worth waiting another year and building some relevant experience, or should I spin what I got and get on with it?

(Maybe relevant: I'm leaning towards retaking the LSAT in October. Practice average was 177-180, and I took the June on 3 hours' sleep thanks to a heat wave and some 3 AM ruckus in my neighborhood.)

Thanks!

Building your resume can be fairly hit or miss. If you know why you want to go to law school I would recommend pushing through this cycle. You could always decide at the end of it that you want to try again the next year. The main loss would be the time and money you put into apps and visits. But in the bigger picture that might be worth it. With your PT average I would recommend retaking in October since that doesn't put you behind for this cycle and any extra points would only help. Though your score is already pretty high so I'm not sure if the potential benefits would be much better than the burden of studying again. I wouldn't ED but if you blanket several schools you should have some decent options.

You should be looking at lower T14 full rides with your numbers, and possibly even mid-T14 full rides if you raise your score. Don't settle for UW/USC/UCLA, and don't worry too much about weak softs. Good luck!

Just try and make your resume not look like shit and you'll be fine.

I'd recommend a retake, higher 170s could yield more scholarships. And you don't really have anything to lose.

ETA I wouldn't even bother applying to nonT14 schools

How can I argue with J.R. Smith?

Regarding where I applied, I am on the West Coast and would like to stay there (career-wise), likely in PI. I was hoping to squeeze a full ride out of one of the lower-T1 schools I mentioned, but if I can do that same thing at a T14, then hell yeah!

Are there particular T14s should I be targeting for maximum cash with these numbers? I've poked around LSN but haven't lurked much on these forums, so any conventional wisdom would be appreciated. Y'all are great.

You should get a ton of money from NU and it places pretty well on the West Coast. Also from Cornell and Duke, but I am not as familiar with their west coast placement.

I think Michigan will also give you a lot. People on here have said Berkeley is stingy with money, but you'll definitely be in there.

You should apply to most of the t14, your GPA and softs will probably mean that you are out at YS and maybe H, but you probably are in everywhere else and with scholarship money from NYU on down.

Don't worry too much about weak softs.

In the UNSWR world : A 4.0/172 who did nothing but play beer pong and play video games has a much better law admission outlook than a 3.4/165 with amazing softs unless that person found the cure to cancer or something like that
