Re: 3.3, 172 ED at Columbia?
People will caution you against ED'ing anywhere on the grounds that an ED acceptance will likely lock you into paying sticker. This is generally sound advice, depending on your financial situation (any outside help?) and how debt-averse you are. Opinions will differ here, but I'd argue that sticker for a near-recession-proof CLS JD is still a defensible choice, depending on the other options you've got on the table.
I think I remember seeing a thread a while back where someone far more talented than me ran the numbers and reached the conclusion that there wasn't much of an ED boost at CLS. That 3.3 will be a sticking point, ED or not, so if you're intent on ED'ing somewhere, NYU/Penn/Virginia may be a safer bet (I'd be willing to bet UVA takes you ED - but know that you're signing up for bigDEBT). Good luck.

sticker is indefensible
anyone who encourages you to take out loans totaling $313,097 at repayment is not looking out for your best interests

Brut, by and large I tend to agree with you here - a splitter with big financial support is one of the few occasions where ED'ing still has any merit.Brut wrote:sticker is indefensible

Assuming someone else is helping offset costs substantially, and assuming OP is dead-set on big law, he or she may find it worth the extra $$$ to make it virtually a lock rather than a coin-flip. Obviously working off a couple big assumptions there - I'm with you that sticker is generally never the move.

it'll be a wastecoup de main wrote:The majority and hopefully 100% by end of next year. This is why I am considering ED so heavily.Brut wrote:what do you mean your financial situation is "secure"

cls ed doesn't significantly increase odds
and you're not even approaching splitter territory
a few other schools were mentioned:
nyu, no significantly increased odds for ed. but in general, your chances are better since you're in splitter territory. i'd put it at less than a coinflip.
penn hates splitters, but loves them when they ed. you'd get in (applying rd probably wl)
likewise, you'd get uva ed, but at that point there's no reason not to just play out the cycle
you'd get multiple other admits in the lower t14, so i don't see why uva ed makes sense unless you have some region-specific reason

splitter + has her/his way paid = fine, go ED if you're sure you want to attend
wasn't apparent (s)he was rich from the OP

Thanks brut, your advice/reasoning is helpful. Nitpicking here, but why do you say i'm not in splitter territory and then the opposite? Also, do you happen to know where ED actually does happen to make a difference besides UPenn? Gtown? Cornell?

Re: 3.3, 172 ED at Columbia?
Apply broadly, compare offers, and negotiate. Sticker price is just a starting point for negotiations--it's practically expected that you bargain these days. Just because you're financially secure doesn't mean you should pay $10 for a gallon of milk.
We need to let binding, unfunded ED programs go to their inevitable death. It should either be the NU model (150k scholarship for ED apps) or nothing.
