What are my chances? - Michigan, Northwestern, and UChicago. Forum

I'm starting to look at law schools! So far, I've looked at: University Of Michigan, UChicago, and Northwestern.

I know Northwestern will be the toughest to get into in terms of work experience, which is why I'm not banking on going there - however, I will apply.


By the time I graduate, I'm looking to have a 3.4-3.5 GPA. My LSAT is a 177. I have some amazing recommendations from professors, internship advisors, and others.

I'm really really nervous because my GPA is on the lower side AND I withdrew from two courses during my undergraduate. However, I'm in the hardest and most prestigious program my college offers.

Just based on this alone (however, I know there are other factors such as the interview, that factor in), what are my chances at these law schools? Should I consider applying to them?


**Any other advice on applying to these schools would really help!

Sounds like you want to stay in the Midwest for law school based on the schools listed? Do you want to stay in the Midwest after law school? I only ask because if not, there are other schools you should probably consider applying to.

You are very likely in at Northwestern and Michigan. Chicago I'd say your odds aren't good but definitely possible so still apply for sure. Good luck!

Maybe someone else should comment on this as well, but maybe OP would be well-suited to consider an ED at NU if he/she is debt averse and wants to stay in the Midwest. As far as I understand, NU, GW, BU, etc use ED to lock in their LSAT median, which OP is well above, and historically doesn't place as much emphasis on GPA. Just an instinctual response that came to me when presented with OP's numbers and (possible) goals.

Even if all OP wants to do is live in the Midwest, s/he should blanket the T14. With a 177, HYS are not impossible (especially if they can get GPA>3.5) and, much more importantly, some very good schools will be willing to throw some $$$ around. The Midwest 3 send more people to Chicago than other T14s, but you also have more people competing. Chi town is a big enough market that any T14 gives OP a realistic chance at getting back to the midwest. Even if OP is completely opposed to going to a coast, applying to more schools will give them more leverage when it comes time to negotiate scholarships.

Oh we are in complete agreement. If it came off like I was implying that OP shouldn't apply anywhere else if he/she wants to stay in The Midwest, that wasn't what i meant. It would definitely be prudent for OP to blanket the T14 at minimum for $ negotiation purposes. And who knows, maybe she/he gets Harvard. Sorry if my first post didn't make that clear.
