178/3.25

Post by Dringus » Thu Apr 17, 2014 12:58 pm

178 LSAT (with 2 cancellations from 2011) and a 3.25 GPA. 3 years of work experience in campaigning/government. I have the means to pay for 2 ½ years of school, and while I would like to avoid going into debt if possible, money isn’t super prohibitive.

Do I have any shot of getting some scholly money at MVP, or would I be lucky enough to get in to one of them? My number one choice is UVA. I want to ED there, unless doing so would preclude scholarship money from UVA or its peer schools.

You will probably get in to UVA, but you won't get much (or any) scholarship. You will almost certainly get $$ from the lower T14 if you are regular admit, so before you ED, figure out if UVA at sticker is worth foregoing Northwestern/Michigan/Cornell on substantial scholarship. I would skip ED and wait for the most $$ in the T14. Those savings would be better off invested. The only ED you should consider is Northwestern, because it comes with 150k.

These might help:

I swear there is an epidemic of people on this board who think that you can get $150K at NU and be below one of the 25th. OP would need at least a 3.5-3.6 to be considered for the $90k scholarship, let alone $150k. The best OP is looking at from NU is $60k, which is still pretty good.

OP, you are very competitive at NYU, NU, and Georgetown. Pretty much everywhere else below CCN will be a mix of admit/waitlist but you will absolutely be denied at Berkeley. Penn tends to waitlist everyone with your numbers. I think you'll get at least one of MV and would likely get around $50k from them if accepted. Probably around the same from NU and GULC.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

Best case scenario, would you do NYU at sticker or Michigan/UVA/NU with a $50,000 scholly?

The latter.

There's no epidemic, it's just the right decision here. ED to NU isn't a lock or even probable, but there's a chance. I think ED anywhere else would be a waste since no scholarship attaches and OP would likely be in RD at most non-HYSCCN schools anyway. ED to NU is OP's best shot at big $$, and ED anywhere else will be wasting the very offers you talked about from GULC/MV/NU (I would certainly call 50-60k substantial).
