Terrible start to undergrad, unsure where I stand now

Post by brothmog » Fri Apr 04, 2014 1:10 pm

Making this thread because I really have no idea where I stand
GPA: 3.57 from a decent state school
LSAT: 173

The first semester of college was an utter disaster for me, as in, it was literally as bad as possible with Fs in all my courses. In high school I tended to slack off unless prodded and with no one prodding me everything fell apart after a minor illness. After spending the winter in as deep a funk as I have ever been in, I pulled up my proverbial bootstraps and got back on track. The next couple of semesters I got As and one ugly C+. Junior and Senior year, I stepped up fully and got all As and took enough classes to get a triple major. I retook several of the classes I failed, so my 'official' GPA is a 3.8 something, as my school calculates only the retaken grade, though of course both are shown on the transcript. This year, I'm studying in China (started the language two years ago and have made what I would say is good progress since) and I'll be applying in the fall with a focus on schools with well regarded international law programs. The unfortunate kicker is that my softs are bad as can be. No work experience, no volunteering, no anything at all. When taken together, these factors leave me of pretty much no idea where I stand as far as admissions are concerned. What I'm curious about is which schools place more or less of an emphasis on my specific deficiencies.

e: tweaked a bit; I guess I was too pessimistic. I am aware that when my numbers are plugged into the calculator the results are fine, but my profile is weaker than the numbers alone would show.

Here's a calculator: http://www.lawschoolpredictor.com/wp-co ... ulator.htm
My LSDAS GPA is 3.57, my UG is 3.85.

You're fine. Likely in at least one CCN with many other good options.

Did you really make a post crying about a 3.6 gpa with a 173 LSAT?

LSAC factors both the old and new into the LSAC GPA, so it sounds like your GPA will be sub 3 for sure and maybe mid 2's.

what is your LSAC GPA?

Keep up the Chinese language skills and work for a couple years after graduation. Those two things will help you get a job once you're in law school. They might even help with admissions a little bit.
