3.0/173 - late apps, etc.

Post by deuceindc » Mon Mar 03, 2014 3:55 pm

Finally got an LSAT score I'm happy with - 173 in Feb (3rd attempt). As stated in the title, UGPA is 3.0 (and change). Softs are unique and strong, but not incredible. Currently in DC, public sector. Looking to stay or at least return - looking for BigGov.

Already have apps in to GWU, GULC, NU, UVA, and Penn. In at GW and WL at NU AJD based on my old LSAT (high 160s). Think I'll be in at all of 'em based on this new score.

The only other T14 schools with apps still open are Columbia, where I'd be 50<LSAT<75 and NYU, where I'm at the 75th exactly. Is it worth it to apply to these schools? I'm currently leaning toward No on C (apps close today) and Yes on N (apps are open until 3/10, bless their hearts).

Similarly, is it worth calling other T6-14s and asking to submit a late app? My LSAT is >=75th at Chi, Duke, and Mich, and I attended one of them for UG if that makes any difference. I'm under Cal's GPA cutoff and Cornell isn't a good fit, career-wise. I assume I'm out at HYS.

I'd prefer not to sit out until next cycle, but if I don't get results I like this time, obviously it's a possibility.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think the short answer is that unless you can't afford to spend the money on app fees then Duke and Michigan are worth going for. UChicago is unfriendly enough to splitters that I frankly wouldn't bother. I'd recommend you take a shot at NYU and Columbia since they both emphasize LSAT > GPA. Making predictions is much harder with those splitter stats across the board and there are no guarantees this late.

It seems you'd have a much better cycle if you just wait until next year. In your shoes I would just wait until then but I can't speak to your situation or preferences. Even if you're satisfied with a school outside the T14 such as GW to stay in DC it could be worth your while in potential scholarships etc.
