Chances for UCLA transfer?

Post by mt90128 » Sat Jan 11, 2014 5:51 pm

I go to a 25-30 ranked school and my fall grades are out: B+, B+, A- in the three doctrinal classes with a B- in the BS legal practice class. Really want to transfer out of this particular school, and wondering what my chances would be for UCLA (main one), USC, Gtown, Cornell. As a side note, any idea on my chances for a private firm job in patent given those grades? Am I an instant ding for Biglaw? Any insights much appreciated. Thanks.

Class rank is not released until after Spring grades, and I also understand that those grades will be a contingency for transferring, but am asking now in order to gauge under the assumption that those grades will be similar to my fall grades. Additionally, GTown has an early decision transfer option based on fall grades that I was considering. Based on the curve I would guess that I am right around the line for top 1/3 or 1/4 of the class. Median is a 3.3 I believe.

I'm no math whiz but (3.3+3.3+3.7+2.7)/4 looks to be below a 3.3. I'm assuming the 2.7 doesn't count as much as the other grades but how do you figure you're top 1/3 or 1/4?

The B- is worth half of the doctrinal classes in credits. And I'm basing my opinion off the testimony of several 2Ls who said that, with a B+ average, they found themselves around the 75th percentile when classes came out. Honestly, this post is mainly to probe what requisite grades/standards would be to transfer up about 10 slots to UCLA, since such specific data is hard to come by.

Don't transfer to Cornell because if I remember correctly, you can't participate in OCI.

You said median at your school is a 3.3. What's your gpa?

You sure you want to pay sticker @UCLA when odds are against getting a market paying job with your grades as a transfer?

I know a guy who transferred to UCLA in the top 15% from Loyola. And I know a guy who transferred to SC in the top 25%. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you more info and contact info if you are interested.
