Chances for HYS? Forum

Hey guys.

Sorry for another 'what are my chances' thread, but I am completely clueless as to my chances for HYS.
Right now, I'm carrying a 4.1 GPA from the University of Alberta (Canada). I have taken the LSAT twice. First time I scored a 167; the second time I scored a 175.

With these numbers I'm confident that my chances for HYS are pretty strong. However, I have five W's from my first two years of undergrad. They are for a medical reason and I have medical documentation to support my claim, but they show up as 'W's' on my transcript. Will these W's kill my chances for HYS?

What do you guys think?

It means that I'm in an honors program; political science to be specific.

I would guess your chances are good at H, and about normal for SY given you can craft an addendum for the W's. I would expect to perform at your numbers, basically.

I'm stressing out because U of Toronto law told me that the W's (even if they are backed up with medical documentation) will be a problem for my potential acceptance. Granted, when I asked them, I did not have a 175 LSAT score.

Submit your transcripts to LSAC. Schools look at your LSAC gpa not your ugpa.

Everyone will be able to see your W's. What I mean by you'll perform at your numbers is that you'll likely be accepted to H and you have the usual chances of being accepted at SY for your numbers. Use law school numbers.

You should apply. Beyond that, your exact chances are kind of irrelevant.

Unless the W's were punitive-meaning they adversely affected your GPA, vs. just not receiving credit for the class and not affecting your GPA one way or another-they will not impact your chances at HYS, particularly since you have a documented medical reason for them. If they DID affect your GPA-and you may not know this until you submit your transcripts to LSAC and find out what your LSDAS GPA is, it will affect you.

I have made sure that the W's are non-punitive. All that shows up on my transcript is a 'W', with no effect on my GPA.

If the Ws are not punitive, I would not worry.

Don't stress out over your non-punitive Ws! With that LSAT score and that GPA, you have a very good shot at the top law schools.

Yeah, the W's are the big worry for me. But I have trouble thinking that they would break my application to H. Possibly S and Y, however.

They will likely glance at your transcript. They will most likely not care about Ws. That said, don't continue to get them, given the option.

Basically they only care about LSAC GPA. And as I said, non punitive withdrawals dont matter. Don't get a ton of course because that'll raise questions, but they really dont matter.

How does being an open homosexual classify as a URM?

It doesn't. URM is about racial/ethnic groups that are underrepresented in American law schools. Now, you might be able to write a good diversity statement, and it might count as an interesting soft depending on what the school's demographics look like, but it doesn't earn a measurable boost the way that being AA/MA/NA does.
