157/3.2

Post by rduffy5 » Mon Nov 18, 2013 11:08 am

I know, I know. "Retake! Don't apply!" I got a 150 in June, and a 157 in October.

I am applying to Syracuse, Georgia State, Villanova, Seton Hall, and Louisville, among others. I have decent softs, went to a very good undergrad liberal arts, worked at a firm and interned for a County Prosecutor, and have a good PS. What do you think my chances are? I already got into Mercer Law, which is ranked significantly poorer than those schools mentioned above.

Obviously you should retake. Attending law school with your numbers would be heavily stacking the deck against yourself.

Youre probably in at any TT where you are at or above the median. Your list looks random. You shouldn't apply to markets you don't have ties to. TT degrees will not help you get a job anywhere except the market theyre located in, and if you don't have ties to that market, it will be very difficult to even secure work there.

Of course I've seen LST. Seton Hall is pretty good on there...65% employment score, only 13% unemployment. Further, they're #36 on the ATL rankings. I think I can definitely get in there because a close family member graduated there and is a successful lawyer. Villanova is a little worse- 51%, 36%. Louisville is 60%, 12%, also not bad. Even GSU is 61%, 18%, and #42 on ATL.

Don't bank on legacy status getting you into a school when you're below both their medians...

In sum, RETAKE.

But for a school like that, you need to get $$$. To further everyone else, retake.

Where do you want to practice? Are you ok with making 40k a year, if that?

65% isn't all that good on its own. That's still almost 1/3 of your class not getting ANY job that requires a JD. And that is completely ignoring the fact that if you come out with a lot of debt most of those jobs that the 65% do get won't be enough for you to pay it off.

I think anybody who has low numbers and starts their post with "I know retake BUT" should just be ignored. You clearly understand that your numbers are not good enough to justify law school at this point (barring you having law school paid for by family or any other way in which you don't take debt - if that's the case never mind). There is a legitimate reason people on here are so quick to throw around "Retake" and "T14 or bust." It isn't to try and knock on someone for not having great stats, it is to help someone not make a HUGE mistake.

These threads are pointless. Apps are at historic lows. Of course someone with a high 150s can find a mediocre law school in some random state to take their federal loan money.

The vital issues are getting a job and keeping debt low. The question should be: where can I get in with $$$ and what kind of jobs do I have to look forward to?

I'd probably go to Seton Hall or 'cuse. Fuck a retake.
