You never had much of a shot at money anyways. You have a solid chance at Northwestern as is.

you're already in the 99th percentile and you're probably not going to get much money from any highly ranked school anyway. Any higher score would be an "aesthetic" advantage at this point in my opinion. While it is still an advantage, I wouldn't invest in the risk and effort of doing so unless you're absolutely sure that you can get a higher score.

I'd second the other posters here by saying I don't even understand why you would retake. 173 is a great score, first of all (hardly "bombed"), and it won't make any difference to your application if you get a 180 in December. You can't "offset" that kind of gpa anymore outside of the splitter-friendly schools.

Apply now but don't waste your money at T14 schools with 3.0+ floors. You have a chance at Northwestern and Georgetown, and you will also get Minnesota, GWU, and Wustl.

The ED scholarship is meant to pull students away from HYS, so you would need a 3.8+ to be competitive for it.

173 is going to be well above the 75th% for any school that would take a 2.5 anyway. I don't see that much point in re-taking in this situation.

I was under the impression I would have a chance at ED at Northwestern based on the analysis on the "Admissions by the Numbers" blog.

Here is what he says about the ED boost for Northwestern:

" Georgetown actually seems to disadvantage ED applicants, as they are 31% less likely to be admitted than identical RD applicants. I have no idea why this might be. We see this same results at George Washington, but because all ED accepted applicants to GW are given substantial scholarships, the result there makes perfect sense. For Georgetown, not so much. I'm definitely interested in what hypotheses you all might have about this.

I have an asterisk beside Northwestern because of Northwestern's recently instituted policy of giving full rides to accepted ED applicants. These regression are based on data going all the way back to the 2003/2004 cycle. One would expect Northwestern's number to be similar to GW's (which isn't listed here), but actually in the first year that Northwestern implemented the program, their ED boost was enormous. "

Many people on LSN applied ED and then were later accepted RD. My guess is that this is what is throwing the analysis. This might still be meaningful; applying ED shows a lot of interest (you'll have to interview on campus) and could help land an acceptance. But there is no reason for them to give you 150k.
