YANS (Yet A Notha Splitta) (3.09/176)
Hey all:
I'm having some difficulty putting together a list of schools to apply to. I want to cast my net wide, but how wide?
Here's where I stand:
Stats
- 3.09 (LSDAS)
- 176 LSAT (one cancellation prior to the score)
Experience:
- Undergrad in political science
- Interned at the economic development agency in post-Katrina New Orleans
- Spent 7 months as a project management expert for an NGO serving marginalized populations (LGBTQ/drug-users/poor farmers) in South Asia
- Currently working as a contract management specialist for a large Canadian retailer
Obviously, I want to go to the best place I can - hoping for NYU. My two recommender profs are pretty good - one of them's an NYU lawprof - but I'm sure everyone else has good recommenders as well...
So yeah, what are my chances? And how soon should I get these apps in?

Also, operating on the assumption that I won't get much money due to my abysmal gpa, I was considering EDing; at the same time, though, I know things are quite fluid in the admissions game right now, and I'm a bit wary of committing to sticker... I'd appreciate any advice on this.

I'd ED to NYU, and then ED to UVA if that doesn't work out.
Yeah, I don't like it, either, but if you want to go to law school with those numbers, you have to resign yourself to either working in biglaw for 4-5 years to pay off that debt, or else going PI/Govt track. Either way, you're probably better off trying to do that from NYU or UVA than from GULC, even if they were to give you 10-15k a year.
Now's the time to do some serious soul searching -- if you go to law school, you'll be spending anywhere from 5 to 10 years doing work you may not really want to do just to make up lost time and money you spent on law school. If that's what you want to do, I think that's great (it's certainly why I'm here), but you have to make that call before you take out a quarter of a million dollars to go, not after.

Given the drop in apps you've got a decent shot at NYU RD. NYU or CLS ED seems reasonable with those numbers which sounds crazy. Maybe hold off on UVA and Penn since they allow ED later on.

Applied last year with a 3.18/174, got $$$ from NU and I think I got off the waitlist at NYU (they called me and asked if I'm still interested, which I presume they would only do if they were going to offer me a spot and wanted to make sure I wouldn't turn it down to protect their YP, and not to say "bummer, cuz you're out!"). Good luck!

Assuming the NYU law prof write a legit LOR, that could actually a big deal at NYU. I've read multiple admissions officers say they don't care if you have a LOR from a celebrity or famous politician but if you had a LOR from an alumni or prof of their school that said something along the lines of "X would fit right in at this school, X's performs at or above the level that one would expect from this school" then that could be a big sell. It certainly would help them overlook the GPA
This is assuming this prof has observed your work and can write you a credible LOR. If you don't have a real relationship with this prof, the adcoms will see right through the LOR.
