What are my chances of getting into UCLA with a 3.889 GPA?
I am still in high school, but planning to major in law/chemistry, but I don't know if I can get in the colleges I want to get into. I still have two years to raise my GPA, but with so much competition, I don't think it will be that easy. My school is really, really competitive and most people get all A's. But so far, in 2 years, I've gotten 4 B's and I'm not sure that will be enough. What are my chances of getting into UCLA, Berkeley, NYU, or USC?

Are you talking about getting into law school or undergrad? Because the purpose of this forum is to talk about your chances at getting into law schools. Also, which college you go to do doesn't matter for getting into law school. It can matter for plenty of other things, but not getting into law school. And you really don't need to worry about getting into law school yet.

I think if I get into a good college as an undergrad, then I have way better chances of getting into a good law school.A. Nony Mouse wrote:Are you talking about getting into law school or undergrad? Look: this is a site about law school admissions. We cannot advise you on where you will get in to undergrad or how to maximize your chances at particular schools, and the purpose of this site is not to answer those questions. So don't bring up those questions here.
As for getting into law school, it doesn't matter where you go to undergrad - it matters what your GPA and LSAT are.

Lurk around here a bit more, and you'll find that the only part of your undergraduate experience that matters is your GPA. Not your major (unless you want to eventually get into intellectual property law/patent law), and certainly not which school you went to.Marie122 wrote:I think if I get into a good college as an undergrad, then I have way better chances of getting into a good law school.A. The best advice I can give you is to major in something that a) you're interested in, b) gives you good prospects for a job in case you decide not to pursue law school, and c) you can maintain a high GPA (NOT 'high for your school', or 'high for an engineering degree', or anything like that, though - if you want to get into law school, a 3.9 in criminal justice will serve you better than a 3.7 in something else.

Practicing law might be a very important goal for you, and you might recognize that getting into a good law school is an important step along the way. But law school is not an end in itself.

" If most people get all A's ", That mean your school professor gave an easy exams or the grade is inflated.Marie122 wrote:What do you mean?cerealdan wrote:Does not compute.Marie122 wrote: My school is really, really competitive and most people get all A's.

This is just false since many high school classes (if not all, I'm sure, at some schools) are not graded on a curve, so everyone can theoretically get good grades if everyone is intelligent and hard-working, even if the material and exams are objectively difficult. My younger cousin went to an elite public magnet high school with extremely rigorous admissions, and because of that most of the students who even got into the school were very competitive/overachievers and got amazing grades. With a few B's among mostly A's, she was pretty much at the bottom of her class. Yes, the average GPA at the school was something like a 4.2 (over 4.0 thanks to AP weighting), which might lead one to believe that the grades were inflated, but the average SAT score was something in the 2200s. Schools like that exist.indo wrote:That mean your school professor give an easy exams or the grade is inflated.Marie122 wrote:What do you mean?cerealdan wrote:Does not compute.Marie122 wrote: My school is really, really competitive and most people get all A's.

Regardless of any of that, this isn't at all the place to be discussing undergrad admissions chances, OP, but you have gotten the excellent advice that going to a better undergrad (barring HYP, and even then to a not-so-significant extent) won't really help you in law school admissions. Regardless, it's still a good idea to invest in a quality undergrad at this point in life - many of us thought we knew what we wanted to do with our lives when we were 18 and changed our minds many times. Enjoy sites like College Confidential and good luck.

Here is some advice: don't go into debt for undergrad, because law school is going to cost 300k by the time you go and adding undergrad debt to that will just make your life that much more miserable after graduation. Major in something that can actually get you a job because no law school is impressed by pre-law majors, and working for a few years before going to school will be good for your finances, job prospects with a JD, and will give you an option besides law school for life if you want to take it.Marie122 wrote:Also, no offense, but if anyone only has to say that I shouldn't be worrying about this right now, please don't comment because I want advice, not criticism.
What school you go to past that doesn't matter.

The chances that your career goals remain the same throughout UG is unlikel. But the fact remains to get into top professional/graduate schools you will need a high GPA. So if you still want to attend law school when that time comes you will be prepared with a good GPA.
