I know a guy
With a 3.05 GPA in philosophy with a 168 LSAT score.
He's applying to Berkeley ED.
I'm curious if he'll get in.
He was also in the Air Force.
What do you think?

I thought you can't ED Berkeley.
He should be ED'ing UVa. Actually has a shot there.

Out at every T14 unless maybe Cornell decides to go nuts with the ED
Berkeley has ED now?

I do not think that Berkeley has a ED.

I think that it would be a long shot at B.
Not that it would likely matter, but was your buddy an officer (and thus several years having passed since undergrad), or was your buddy enlisted who completed a degree while dealing with rigors of active duty operations schedule?

GULC ED or Cornell ED woul be the best bet. But the real best bet is retaking for a 170.

The ED to B bit has my flame-tennae raised, but as a Vet + Boaltie, I'll bite.louierodriguez wrote:With a 3.05 GPA in philosophy with a 168 LSAT score.

How long in the USAF? What sorts of tours, experience?
ETA: as others have mentioned above, odds are very slim.

As a vet applying this cycle, I'm hoping this stuff matters. I'm sure just being in the USAF counts for something, but presumably how much depends on what he did in his time. Not to denigrate anyone's service, but is he getting out as an E4 who did nothing but garrison stuff in the states for a few years? Is he an NCO/officer who led airmen on deployment? Big difference.Rotor wrote: How long in the USAF? What sorts of tours, experience?

It definitely matters. Dean T really likes his vet admits for the diversity of experience we bring to the school. More significant service=more significant diversity. It doesn't have to be Silver Star type stuff or even combat (I had 0 actual combat time), but it does have to be compelling.TheSpanishMain wrote:As a vet applying this cycle, I'm hoping this stuff matters. To give the OP a comparison, I was sub-25th %ile GPA and sub-median LSAT when I got accepted (by TLS conventional wisdom, an auto-ding). But I had 20+year separation from my GPA, a few "in the news" type operational deployments and a great letter of rec from my 1-star mentor (for whom I worked directly, twice). Now, my GPA was substantially higher than your buddy's GPA, but because US News cares about medians not means, with the right package, his sub-25th counts the same as mine with respect to ranking. The bigger concern in his case is that it may send a strong signal to Dean T about his academic potential without a good explanation in the package.
