165/3.19
3.19 / 165
Male, Asian American. Our family did have financial difficulties because my parents are divorced and my mom has been suffering from cancer so treatment has been expensive. What do you guys think? Trying to go to some schools up North if possible

Do you mean Canada?February1088 wrote:Trying to go to some schools up North
You might have some luck with some lower T1s, but you should DEFINITELY retake if possible. All law schools outside HYS are "regional," so make you sure you know where you want to work before you choose a school. Are you applying for this upcoming cycle?

You'll probably get W/L at Cardozo, but it's not a worthwhile investment without $$$ in scholarship money.
Seriously, you need to retake. Study like crazy, bump up your score 6-7 points, ED to UVA or NW . . . and then profit.

Re-take is the typical response on these things. Always something to consider but not always what people are willing to do. There is a school in basically every geographic area that you could get into if you really wanted to its just about how far down the list you want to go. For NYC I think you have a decent shot at Cardozo although I don't think they're a great investment without at least some scholarship money. You would have an outside shot at Fordham in this down cycle but I would expect a Waitlist if anything. After that you could go farther down (NYLS, Brooklyn, St, John's, CUNYs) and look for big scholarship money. Also, if your still in UG get straight A's, the GPA hurts you more than the LSAT I'd say.

Re: 165/3.19
This last cycle, people with 3.5/165 got wait listed at Fordham. I would be VERY surprised if the OP got in at Fordham with his stats. No other New York schools are worthwhile investments - there just aren't enough jobs to go around.hunter.d wrote:You would have an outside shot at Fordham in this down cycle but I would expect a Waitlist if anything
OP - how long did you spend studying for the LSAT? You can EASILY get 5-10 more points with good studying. Retake the test in June and profit next fall!

Depending on how severe the decline in applicant's is this cycle, OP's stats might get a waitlist from Forhdam with a good app and economic/personal adversity.
You can ride it out and maybe you get picked up off of it. Either way it is still considerable debt for a good school but one that has been having problems placing grads.
If you think you have 5+ points in you, retake is worth it, but your to the point where you might want to hold off a year if you do decide to retake. Too soon for Dec and Feb would put you at a disadvantage in the cycle.

I dont understand all this cycle talk. Are you guys talking about the period of submitting the application?
So if I chose to submit my application by the end of this week, is it a no-go?

Yes. The 2012-13 cycle runs from when ever apps opened till whenever they close for starting law school in the fall of 2013 (Class of 2016).February1088 wrote:I dont understand all this cycle talk. Are you guys talking about the period of submitting the application?

You are not too late. Late would be after christmas. You should really try to get your apps in before thanksgiving if you can.
