2.3 GPA /177 LSAT
Hey, long time lurker.. figured I fell under "super-splitter" from this post- http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 9&t=170051
I failed every class both semesters junior year (apparently this happens when you skip the tests), and dropped my GPA from a 3.1 to a 2.2. I was never the most diligent student, and I had some personal/medical issues that caused the wheels to come off. I'm looking into possibly getting those semesters removed from my transcript, but it's certainly nothing to count on.
I've been doing a lot of research into "splitter-friendly" schools, but it seems kind of hit and miss. I'd prefer to go somewhere in Texas or Arizona, although I'd be happy to go anywhere. I'm a Chemistry major at UT Austin if that's relevant. Other than doing well from here on out, and attaching a separate statement about my GPA, does anyone have any advice for the application process?
Also, I'd love to hear from anyone who was personally in the same boat and if they got in anywhere.
Thanks!
I'll add that this is pretty disheartining:

Re: 2.3 GPA /177 LSAT
You are a long shot at UT. They have a pretty hard GPA floor (3.5ish). However, you have a good shot at UHLC/SMU/B/UA/ASU with some money if they dont not admit you because of yield protection.
I think you should apply to NYU/Penn as your reaches. Consider ED.
NU and Georgetown should be your targets.
Other than that, apply anywhere you would be interested in because you will have a VERY unpredictable cycle.

Also, are you an under represented minority? That would play a part in your admissions cycle, if you are.

People are being way too optimistic. Your best shots are WUSTL, UIUC, UM, UW, the traditional midwest splitter schools. You have a long shot at Georgetown (with ED). For NU, get WE for a few years, then reapply (your score is good for five years). Screw any other schools that would take you; too much debt for the job options.

Who cares if they are where OP wants to live and practice
But yeah, good point about WUSTL and UMN.

I usually respect your advice Nova but encouraging OP's 2.3 to submit an app to NYU and Penn is throwing ~200 bucks into a giant black hole.

You should have gone to class.
0 chance at T14. Maybe T20, but even that is a longshot.
After all, if you skip classes in undergrad, who's to say you wouldn't do it as a law student?

Ahh, yeah you're completely right. I was putting a ton of emphasis on the full semester of Fs due to medical reasons that dropped OP's GPA down a full point.2014 wrote:I usually respect your advice Nova but encouraging OP's 2.3 to submit an app to NYU and Penn is throwing ~200 bucks into a giant black hole.

I understand. I'm not feeling entitled to Yale, just looking for advice. I'd be thrilled with top 50, honestly.bigvinny wrote:You should have gone to class.

You are deep into the 99th percentile. Someone in the first tier will take a chance on you. Hopefully it will be a good fit.aztx1991 wrote: I understand. I'm not feeling entitled to Yale, just looking for advice. I'd be thrilled with top 50, honestly.
Also, UH/SMU are just as good as, if not better than, many Top 50s because of the markets they serve.
If you have not seen this article by Samara, it is defintely worth the read, http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 2&t=162680 (How to be a successful splitter)

Have you been to the Northwestern thread? They are very "super-splitter" friendly. UVA ED may also be an option.bigvinny wrote:You should have gone to class.

By medical problems do you mean addiction/drug related? Could be relevant to the discussion of your chances (addendums). I have a few buddies that went to UT Austin, majored in chemistry, and all failed out due to growing problems with addiction.

You need to fight with the force of a thousand suns to make this happen. Do it for the 177, it deserves nothing less.aztx1991 wrote:I'm looking into possibly getting those semesters removed from my transcript

First of all - way to state the obvious in really rude and unhelpful way.bigvinny wrote:You should have gone to class.

After all, if you skip classes in undergrad, who's to say you wouldn't do it as a law student?
Secondly - way to disseminate false information.
Finally - OP, your best shots at T14 are NU (with WE), GULC, and UVa. Apply broadly and as early as possible in the cycle, do every extra essay/addendum you possibly can, and make sure everything is edited over and over and over again until they are as close to perfect as they possibly could be. I have a 2.8/176 and I got into all of the 3 listed T14s (see my profile for more info). Your GPA is significantly lower, but you still have a shot because once you hit below 2.9-ish, all GPAs are pretty equally shitty in the eyes of adcomms. Feel free to PM me with questions if you have any.

Are there extenuating circumstances that explain the GPA, other than skipping tests?

Go to WUSTL because you'll lock in a T30 w 1/3-1/2 scholly. (unless you inexplicably sneak into the T14)
