3.93/171 URM Vet
First time poster who's been lurking for a while. 3.93 LSAC GPA with a 171 June LSAT (PT was around 165-167).
URM: PR male.
Softs: Veteran (completed Airborne and Ranger School while with 82nd Airborne), revived a Vets club on campus, volunteered at children's hospital and adult literacy program. Played two years of CC basketball, Track & Field.
Post grad WE: Judicial Fellowship with Superior Court Judge, currently working as a healthcare claims analyst.
Wife is a senior auditor with a Big 4 accounting firm and has the opportunity to promote as the end of the year to Chicago, New York, Los Angeles (we both went to UCLA), Dallas, or Boston. I've visited CLS, NYU, UChi, and NU. I really liked NU and NYU. My wife will be waiting to make her decision until I hear back from a school (pretty much ruled out Dallas and LA). I'm thinking about applying ED to NU for scholarship (felt most comfortable there), RD to NYU and hopefully get some $$, and taking a shot in the dark with an App at HLS. I've already used GI Bill.
My Brother-In-Law and Cousin work as Senior Associates for a V50 in NY. Both are telling me to ED to NU for $$$$, but I would like to end up in CA or NY.
Thoughts?

Apply everywhere. I predict you'll get S/H and a full ride of at least one of CCN.
The obligatory "you suck because you're going to tie up 150k+ at each school in scholarship money" post. You can support the rest of us by withdrawing from your safeties (which will end up being like, UVA with 90k) when you're sure you're not going to attend. :p

Don't ED anywhere imo. Everywhere, including NU, will probably give you close to a full ride regardless and HYS are very much in play.

If you apply this upcoming cycle, I think you'll get 2 of HYS and $$$ at each of CCN.

You're good. I agree with others that you should not ED anywhere unless you really, really want to go there. Scholarships should follow.
Also, which GI Bill did you use up? If you were eligible for Chap 30 and Chap 33 and only used up the 36 months of Chap 30, you can still get 12 months of Chap 33. This "loophole" helped me a lot during the first half of law school.

I did use the chapter 30 benefits and thanks for the heads up! I'm going to pass on the ED option and instead blanket the T14 and see what happens.

I'm also going to recommend retaking for a 173. I don't really think you need it for any school but Yale -- but seriously, if you're that close, how hard would it be just to give it a little push and give it your all for YLS?hopefulgrunt wrote:I did use the chapter 30 benefits and thanks for the heads up! Before a stream of TLSers tell me to gtfo, I'm going to point out that if OP did get dinged from YLS, it really, really shouldn't be because the LSAT was below median. If anyone has an almost-lock, it's this guy.

Based on these numbers, even less,Wormfather wrote:The only way this cycle sucks at all for you is if you ED anywhere. You are the holy grail of AA males. There are probably only 50 of us who broke 170. Hopefully, I'll see you at HYS next fall.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, although I'm Puerto Rican not AA! I'll be 34 when I graduate from LS and I worry about my age working against me with regards to landing biglaw so I may focus more on academia or PI. I'm applying T14 across the board with UCLA/USC, BU/BC, and Fordham as safeties.

Entirely unnecessary to apply to UCLA/USC, BU/BC, and Fordham- in fact you might have a worse chance at those schools than the top 6 since they'll probably have such a hard time believing that you'll attend that they'll just wait list you.hopefulgrunt wrote:Thanks to everyone for the advice, although I'm Puerto Rican not AA! That thought did cross my mind. The only reason I thought about applying to safeties was to cover myself if for some reason my wife gets jobbed doesn't get to choose her new location and she gets stuck in one of the cities, lets say Boston, and I get rejected from HLS. Even then I would only attend with full scholy/no crappy stips, but I see where you're coming from.

Re: 3.93/171 URM Vet
If you don't mind spending the $20 per school (you will have fee waivers but just pay the LSAC fee) and spending the time to write a couple convincing essays about why you might actually go to those schools, then I see no harm in it. I was just saying you wouldn't have to if you didn't want.hopefulgrunt wrote:That thought did cross my mind. I agree with this prediction.Lovely Ludwig Van wrote:If you apply this upcoming cycle, I think you'll get 2 of HYS and $$$ at each of CCN.
Apply to YHS, CCN, and the rest of the T14 that you want to use for scholarship negotiation purposes.
You're going to have a great cycle.

Considering that his highest PT was 167 and that he'll probably get into at least one of YLS peer schools if not YLS, this is dumb.twentypercentmore wrote:I'm also going to recommend retaking for a 173.
