3.1 GPA, Ran for Mayor of hometown, No LSAT yet, THOUGHTS?
Hey everyone, first time posting, just finished UG at large public university and applying for 2013 school year. A little more about me 22yo, filipino, male.
I know that my GPA is on the low side and I need to rock the LSAT. Mostly wondering about the value of my Personal Statement. Basically during my first year of college I ran for mayor of my hometown (suburb of about 73000 people). I lost pretty badly (no money, was a write-in candidate and I was running against a 12 year incumbent) but it was an amazing experience. I'm shooting for an LSAT in the +170 range (this is likely, based on some practice tests).
How might this help me for a chance at the Top 50? or Top 30? or Top 14? Would some T-14 schools that are more forgiving of splitters take a chance on me? I have no delusions though about the T14, but if I can get into a Top 50 school I'll be happy. Obviously all this speculation is contingent on my scoring well on the LSAT.
Thanks everyone!

It might be a cool PS topic, but I don't think it's gonna be a major boost softs-wise.

I scored upper 170s on many PTs. I ended up with a 168. Numbers are basically all that matter. I probably should have given the LSAT another shot. Lawschoolnumbers will give you the best view of your general chances if you just want meaningless predictions.

Doubt you will out perform your numbers because of that. Good luck on the LSAT.

i don't think this is that unique. i was a write-in candidate for the 2008 presidential election, but i don't include it on my resume because Mickey Mouse got more votes than i did.

I once got advice from a professor that the best thing you can do as a non-biglaw attorney is to run for local office and lose. Everybody knows who you are, you don't have to actually do the job, and your career prospects go through the roof. Interesting take I thought.
But no, I don't really think this will be a great soft.

Assuming 170+, is going to be a huge boost, and here's why. As a splitter you don't have much shot at Duke, and without WE you don't have much of a shot at NU. So you're looking at Michigan, Virginia, and Georgetown. Georgetown will definitely take you, but you'd rather go to Michigan or Virginia. Virginia is a tough sell unless you're in-state. Michigan, on the other hand, will like that you ran for mayor of your suburb and lost. Michigan eats up stupid shit like that. Work the Filipino into it.
