3.6/159
I go to college in Florida, and now I am applying to Florida law schools. Ideally, I'd like to go to UF Law.
What are my chances with a 3.6gpa in business and 159 lsat? Also, I have good, but not great extracurriculars (officer in a few clubs and involved in student government).
Yes, I know a 159 is low. I did not study that much because I am not sure how competitive it is.
Should I retake?
Thanks.

You should always be shooting for a 180. Looking for a particular score always limits how well one does.Dragonite wrote:What score should I be looking at for UF law?
FWIW, Florida's medians are 3.67 and 161.

162 or higher since Florida's median is a 161.

I know this is TLS, but since I want to live in Florida, and I am not cut out for cutthroat schools in the north. I'd rather go to UF (which is actually elite within the state).t14fanboy wrote:Sign up for June LSAT, get a 170+, and go to a t14.
I guess shooting for a 180 is good. Luckily, with studying I see myself getting a 165+.

There is no luck. You will study hard and you will rock it hard.Dragonite wrote:I know this is TLS, but since I want to live in Florida, and I am not cut out for cutthroat schools in the north. After taking a lot of business classes, I realize I don't want anything to do with accounting, finance, merchandising, or marketing. It's boring and corporate. I am so over the business environment, stylized Powerpoint presentations, and "synergy". However, on that note I do hope to get a business job eventually, just not in an excel-monkey position where I want to fall asleep.

I think you'll find UF is exponentially more competitive than those blasted t14 schools. Only a very small portion of the UF students will end up in the top 10% of their class, and the unlucky 90% will likely end up with tons of debt and not a whole lot to show for it.Dragonite wrote:I know this is TLS, but since I want to live in Florida, and I am not cut out for cutthroat schools in the north. On the flip side, by going to UVA, Duke, or GULC (all "south"-ish schools), you'll find yourself in a much better position come graduation.
If you're absolutely determined to go to UF, though, make sure you squeeze as much scholarship money out of it as you can. That means getting some big LSAT points. Granted, you'll be making about the same as you'd be making with a bachelors, doing as mundane work as an excel monkey (or WestLaw monkey?), and have spent three years in law school, but at least you won't be walking away with 120k+ of debt.

I hope you've done the research and know what you're getting into with law.Dragonite wrote:After taking a lot of business classes, I realize I don't want anything to do with accounting, finance, merchandising, or marketing. Well, I have done research although I do realize I am not sure exactly. Never really interned with a law firm.
I am somewhat familiar with contracts as my grandfather had a career in that.
Also, I may come off as defensive, but I really appreciate the input.

Two people ITT saying Florida's median is a 161. Do we have brand new data saying the median has gone down? It's been a 162 for at least two years.CanadianWolf wrote:162 or higher since Florida's median is a 161.
If OP wants a scholly he better get a 164 at least, 165 to be comfortable. Even then it will only be 7-8k/yr. With a 167 he would be looking at 42k over three years.
Speaking from experience about the scholarships. 4.0/163 wasn't worth a dime in merit-aid, but 3.4/164 sure was.
ETA: Don't count on getting in with a 159/3.6. With a 3.6 you should have a 162 to feel comfortable with your chances for admission.
