Deposit or reapply next cycle? 172/3.5ish

Post by sums » Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:46 pm

Hey guys! I have a quick question that I want your opinions on :)
I applied this cycle assuming I'd be graduating a year early and matriculating in the fall (to accommodate the fiance's schooling and career, basically). His plans have changed so honestly I'm indifferent as to reapplying and would prefer to defer even if I do deposit. So far my top choice right now of my acceptances is Georgetown, but I'm still waiting hopelessly at nyu/mich/uva (retaking the Dec LSAT really hurt me, I think).
The problem is I'm not sure if I should deposit at Georgetown or reapply next year hoping specifically for nyu/upenn/northwestern ED (I'm open to going anywhere, but my fiance is applying to medical school with a mediocre gpa so those cities have biggest chances for him to matriculate somewhere nearby, at least more so than mich/cornell/etc).
The main problem is that I'm a hard science major and finishing some upper level microbio/biochem classes this summer, so my gpa when reapplying will probably be around a 3.3x-3.4x instead of the 3.5x I originally applied with. Obviously I'll still have no FT WE.
So my question is basically: should I risk reapplying next year with a lower gpa and aiming for penn ED while blanketing the T14, or should I count my blessings and deposit at GTown to be safe?

Thanks guys

hahaha, I wish I could retake even for a 180- :( And yeah I know about NU. I was thinking I could have 1 year WE by matriculation, but I doubt that'd even be enough. I guess I'm really just wondering if penn would take me ED with a 172/3.3 or 3.4 after giving me the WL this cycle, and if there's a huge gtown would accept me again next year if I turned them down this year.

I don't understand why you didn't apply early decision to Penn this cycle. A cursory look at LSN shows that a 172/3.5 ED is practically a lock while no ED is a toss up with waitlist being very likely. If you still want Penn, apply ED but your chances are less than they would have been this cycle. If that doesn't work out, ED GULC (even if you don't ED you would have a chance at getting in again, but if you do I think you are very safe because you are assuring them that you want to come).

You would also be a lock at UVa and have a very good shot at Mich with ED apps, but if you don't want to be there for personal reasons don't do it obviously.

You have a very good chance at NYU if you apply early next cycle.

So you are absolutely locked into those summer courses as grad requirements? The thing is you are now in a position many law school applicants would kill for--you have the ability to change your undergrad GPA, which there is no way to hide When You Apply to Law School. I would start trying to massage that GPA any way you can starting now. Bust your ass off to get good grades in those upper level courses, and take more, easier courses to boost the GPA. Add an easy minor if possible.

Not with a 3.3-4, 172.

Yeah exactly, I fear that I'll fall below their gpa floor. There's a decent/good chance I could still end with a 3.5 and ED, but I'm worried that being WL this cycle (assuming that's what's to come) will cause them to just WL/reject me again next cycle, or at least to defer me to RD which wouldn't help me at all. Assuming I hit the 3.5 again, if you guys were me, would you ED nyu or ED penn?

OP have u told these schools ud commit if admitted? That might be a game changer for them or at least make u an early call from the WL if they know they can have u.

This is a tough call. Looking at LSN, there is only one person in with a 3.5/172. However, there are a smatterings of 3.55-3.6/172 that are in. I think you'd be an absolute lock (assuming the normal - not a serial killer, etc) at Penn ED, although I'm not sure it's worth it considering it kills your ability to negotiate.

With an early, quality app - I think you'll get 1-2 of MVP RD, and have a great shot at NGC (not the National Geographic Channel, sadly).

Risky though. I'm not sure what I'd do in your position (although we have almost the same stats).

Well I told penn I'd definitely attend, but I still haven't heard at NYU (just assuming I'm prob WL but who knows, maybe they'll spice it up with a rejection next week or something!) I've had some extenuating family stuff going on and I guess at this point I'd rather just defer or reapply than have penn accept me off the WL in the summer and have to get up and go across the country.

And thanks for your input!! That's what scares me too. I know NYU ED is super risky, but gosh I just wish that I could be the one in a million...or that Penn will accept me RD with a super early app so I have them on lock if nyu says no. But at the same time I almost just want to ED penn to be "safe", because I'd much rather go there than the rest of MV and everything following.

Do you have to update your transcripts? Just curious because I'm in the same boat. GPA has gone down since I submitted transcripts to LSAC. GPA went down from a 3.7 to a 3.56 due to a horrible semester last fall. I was going to start this year but I'm going to wait until next year. Does anyone know if you are required to update them.

I have no idea if you're required, but I'm sure schools will ask. I didn't update my fall transcripts (mainly because I didn't even think schools would still be making decisions this late or that 1 more semester would matter to them), but a few schools actually did say they were putting me on hold until I sent them in (which I never did because those schools were t30 and I've been t14 secure). I'd be interested in the answer to this as well, but I'm sure a lot of schools will still request them even if you're not required to send them in.
