Apply to Yale?

Post by brownpride » Tue Feb 14, 2012 3:48 pm

Tomorrow is the application deadline for YLS, but I'm not sure if I should apply and the application fee is a lot for me right now. I don't want to apply if I have a really crappy shot, so please comment as to your thoughts on how much/little of a shot I have and whether it's worth the $100.

I'm graduating from undergrad in April with a BA, with a 4.18/173. I have some supplementary academic experiences though no publications, and a lot of academic and leadership awards including some really prestigious ones. My work experience has been mostly part-time in school, but I've got a lot of campus leadership activities and several hundred hours of recorded volunteer work. Overall, nothing too special. My PS and 250 are also not bad but not exceptional, as are my recommendations as unfortunately my chosen profs didn't work out and I had to get very mediocre refs.

Thoughts?

Numerically, you're in great shape, and there's not really a way for us to tell you how strong the rest of your application is. If it were simply numbers-based, you would get in, so I'd definitely apply

Yeah, it can't hurt to try. Obviously pretty much everybody who applies is a long shot since so few people are accepted, but you have as good a shot as basically anybody else so I'd say to go for it.

Based on numbers, you have as good a shot as anyone. I know the app fee is a lot, but you also don't want to wonder "what if" for the rest of your legal career.

I think it's worth the shot.

If I were in your situation (which, unfortunately, I'm not), I would apply, and if you don't get in, just take a year and get some experience and reapply. If you don't get into Y next year, just go to H or S.

You should have applied to Chicago & Michigan since you would likely get serious consideration for full tuition & fees scholarships.

Thanks for the advice guys!

I didn't apply to Chicago because I wasn't interested in the program; however, I did apply to UMich. Yale was the only one I left cause of the 250.

saw this post. looked at all the encouragement for the guy to apply to yale. shit i have better numbers than him, why didn't i apply?

frantically wrote the 250 word essay in the last 12 hours. put together the other additional shit yale needs for work history and activities during school. paid the $100 app fee and submitted.

wave of relief. starting to feel good - if they think he can get in, well what about me? look at the thread again to gloat. re-read his stats. oh. his gpa is 4.18. not 3.18.

i'm an idiot.

nsbane:
1. HAHAHAHAHA. That made my day.
2. Don't worry - I'm sure if you felt confident enough to apply you have a shot.
3. I wrote my 250 in the last 2 hours. Yours is undoubtedly better than mine.

Well the Yale application deadline got moved to March 1st (http://www.law.yale.edu/admissions/JD.htm) so if you're still dallying and might want to take a bit more time refining that 250, I say go for it.

Great numbers by the way! I'm sure you'll have a great cycle regardless!
