A buddy of mine, who isn't on TLS, is wrapping up his apps, and asked me to see if the collective group had any advice for him.
3.9+ GPA
169 LSAT (retook a 163, will not retake again)
K-JD, but good softs for someone in college.
He's applying to:
YHSCCNBVD
but Stanford and Boalt are 1 and 2, by wide margins. What are the odds he gets in to one or both of those?

Re: Asking for a friend: 3.9/169
YHSCCN are pretty much all wasted apps. Virginia and Duke are solid matches given his numbers. Boalt is somewhere in between. This would be a terrible application list since he has 2-3 matches, and zero safeties.
Edit: CCN aren't entirely wasted. He would stand a slight chance with a 169. So I guess they would be reach schools at least worth an application to see if he perhaps gets lucky. But YHS are obviously all auto-rejects.

Both are highly unpredictable.
On the 169/3.9 alone, I'd say your buddy would have a decent shot at both, obviously a bit better at Boalt.
Combined with K-JD and an earlier 163, however, I think Stanford is pretty much out. Boalt is still doable if his personal statement and references are great. Also, applying early (i.e. this time of year or earlier, basically) is incredibly helpful for borderline cases.
But like I said, those two schools are both rogues to some degree.

Even with the high GPA, I think he should apply to some non T14s as well. Unless he's T14 or no law school.
