173/2.76 + great softs
As I'm an IUB grad (and resident of Indiana), I'll be applying to IUB, but am wondering what other schools I should apply to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Minnesota, Wash U St Louis if you wanna stay around the midwest, Northwestern would be a reach but if you have great work experience you have a chance.

Great softs as in URM, olympic medalist or cured cancer? Or great softs as in clubs/internships, etc. (I'm not asking to be mean, I'm asking because it would impact your cycle).

Softs are some mind-altering concept that make people unable to understand the significance of their own.Grizz wrote:regular 'ol softswoodsjm wrote:Work experience and will have a rec from a great philosophy prof. who part times at U of C (full time IU). Been good friends for awhile.

I figured as much.Already know my fall backs and mids, just looking for the optimistic range.
Also, perhaps it doesnt matter but I did have a good upward grade trend after going on meds for OCD so Im throwing around putting that in an addendum.
Finally, I love TLS haha. Great comments.

Write an addendum if you have a good reason for your grades. AKA: family issue, illness, etc etc. Don't write one if your only reason is 'I was immature and then I realized how important my grades were'.woodsjm wrote:I figured as much.Already know my fall backs and mids, just looking for the optimistic range.

As for reaches, look at NU, UVa, and GULC (PT program). Those are probably your only shot at the T14, NU more likely than the others (assuming you have FT, post-grad WE...do you?). UVa and GULC have pretty strict 3.0 floors, and though they'll dip down occasionally I think a 2.76 is too low for them. It's worth a shot though. UVa/GULC are only possible if you ED.
Assuming over 1 year of post-graduate fulltime work experience, you're a pretty good candidate for sticker at NU.

Do you have post-grad work experience? Or just summer/part-time jobs? If post-grad WE, how much and what was it?

I worked for a religious (christian) organization for a year (finished last may) and then switched to law firm (internship...) this past summer.
I want to go into academia and realize the need to go T-20. Maybe the best route is T-30 then hope to transfer up?

Also, great softs? Really? Average AT BEST!woodsjm wrote:I worked for a religious (christian) organization for a year (finished last may) and then switched to law firm (internship...) this past summer.
Great soft = Published a text book and started international charity
Good soft = Teach For America
Average Soft = a job (like you had)
Below average soft = organizations in college
No soft = straight from UG and nuffin'
Not trying to be a dick, just trying to be realistic. Same thing happened to me about a year ago when I first lurked on this board.

Re: 173/2.76 + great softs
You REALLY need to attend HYS or Chi in order to even have a chance at academia, and your GPA automatically shuts you out from any of those schools. Your best bet is to gun for Northwestern, and then try to transfer from NU to HYS/Chi, but TBH the chances of you doing so are very very slim. Don't give up on your dream, but know that the likelihood of achieving it is...incredibly low.
I'm sorry ):

I haven't looked deeply into this, but I do think there is a minuscule chance of doing academia from a lower ranked school if you teach at the school you went to law school at. It seems like nearly every law school hires a few alums. So go to a school with all old profs that are going to retire soon.

Just be Christopher J. Buccafusco, bro.
EDIT: For context, he's a professor who graduated from a T-35 without honors, but has proceeded to publish an article in a top-20 journal every 4 months and is thus highly employable.

You may end up being a shitty lawyer, but at least you'll have hilarious logic.Tom Joad wrote:So go to a school with all old profs that are going to retire soon.
