166/3.9 chances at ED Michigan?
As stated in the subject line, I have a 166 lsat and 3.93 GPA from the Honors College at a major public university. I have good softs and great recommendations, and am wondering what my chances are at Michigan ED vs. non ED. Thanks so much!

RD, almost none.ljbreck wrote:As stated in the subject line, I have a 166 lsat and 3.93 GPA from the Honors College at a major public university. I have good softs and great recommendations, and am wondering what my chances are at Michigan ED vs. non ED. Thanks so much!
ED, plausible shot.
I'd recommend EDing to UVA first though. Their placement is essentially equal to Michigan's, and you have a much better shot at getting in there.

You should research this a little, but: I think Virginia guarantees a turnaround time of 15 days for their ED. You might be able to ED there, and then get an ED app to Mich by Nov. 15 if you get turned down.

If Michigan is your first choice ED there, if that doesnt work out shoot an ED to UVA (you are guaranteed in with those numbers ED). Unless it has changed from last year there is no deadline for ED, but there is at Michigan.
Nothing wrong with having UVA as a back up

I think gator's GPA was a touch below the median. OP's is above, giving him a much better shot.nmare wrote:http://lawschoolnumbers.com/gatorapplicant

+1 There is a big difference between a 3.82 and a 3.9 to UVAHeavenWood wrote:I think gator's GPA was a touch below the median. OP's is above, giving him a much better shot.nmare wrote:http://lawschoolnumbers.com/gatorapplicant

If you do apply ED and you are dinged it probably won't be for you numbers. Make sure your essays are solid. Essay is plural because you should write an optional one if you would like to be admitted.

Haha you must not know how the game is played. Even though the numbers are similar in your eyes, they are not even close in UVA's eyesnmare wrote:http://lawschoolnumbers.com/gatorapplicant

Could you guys elaborate on why in particular it is such a big difference at UVA to have a 3.9 or so over a 3.8? And what other schools might be like this (i.e. weighted more than usual toward GPA (especially as you approach 4.0))? Thanks for the insight.

It's all about statistics. As weird as it may sound, with UVA's median GPA being 3.86, a 3.9 GPA helps their median to go up marginally. A 3.8 causes it to go down.upandup wrote:Could you guys elaborate on why in particular it is such a big difference at UVA to have a 3.9 or so over a 3.8? Other schools that are like this are schools with a GPA median between 3.8 and 3.9. As you approach 4.0, you eventually approach being above EVERY school's median, which is a great place to be because no matter what, they view you as being able to help their GPA median.
The amount of weight they place on GPA depends on a number of factors. If a school wants to increase its GPA median, they tend to favor high GPAs. If a school wants to improve its LSAT median (like WUSTL this year), they'll take anyone with the LSAT median they want regardless of GPA. It all depends on the school, where it ranks, and where it wants to rank in a given year.
