Reapplying 171/168/3.86 Where to ED?
I applied last cycle and was waitlisted at columbia (with ED, rejected in August), accepted to NYU, and waitlisted at chicago. I could not attend due to personal reasons and I tried to raise my score in the meantime and obviously things did not go as I hoped.
I need you guys to give me advice on what my strategy should be for this cycle. Should I try to ED to columbia again with way better essays and lors, or what? by the way, i am CCN or bust. I am hoping the decreased applicants will give me the tug I need to squeak by but i do not know for sure. thank you for the help!

Dude it's been ten minutes! And ED deadlines are months away.
NYU seems to like you. Lock it in with ED and enjoy.

yeah i know that should be the safe choice, but i love columbia since i got into one of its masters programs there last year and it would save me a years worth of tuition if i can get into columbia law school.

Did you apply last cycle with the same numbers or was the 171 recent?
Is your question whether to ED to Chicago or Columbia because NYU isn't your preferred choice?

maybe thats why they WL'd you? When did you ED? Maybe if you do it earlier and tailor your essays (i.e. say you are interested in whatever masters you got into and relate it to how you would study law) you'll have a better shot (although the 168 might hurt).
Did you do the masters last year or just get in? Maybe you could get a letter of rec from one of the master's teachers at Columbia?
I'm not sure how the -1 year tuition deal works, but does it still hold if you apply ED? usually ED = no/very little $$
IMO you should ED to your first choice. If you have better essays and better LOR's it might help you, and as you mentioned there's the decreased applicant pool (although Columbia seems to have kept it's medians/#'s pretty steady)
It's also a different cycle, you never know who's applying, good luck!

You have the same numbers. Did you apply to Chicago late last year? If not, then expect the exact same cycle.
Since you are CCN or bust, you should ED one of the three. Chicago might accept you, but Columbia has already seen this movie and given it two thumbs down. I'd say ED NYU or Chicago or seriously risk going 0-3.

lol, also keep in mind that Columbia (unlike NYU) keeps applications on file for at least 1 year, so they will be comparing your old app to your new one.Tiago Splitter wrote:You have the same numbers. Did you apply to Chicago late last year? If not, then expect the exact same cycle.

I don't have any advice for your question, but I do have a question for you. Why are you CCN or bust, to the point of EDing and likely paying sticker, when you could potentially get a ton of $$$ at MVP?

my wife got a job in nyc and with our kids i do not want to be apart from them since they are only toddlers. plus, we have a pretty good amount of savings in our accounts so i won't be in too much debt.
so you guys do not think a way better ps and the smaller applicant pool will allow me to sneak into columbia this year?

Doesn't that make you CN or bust? If your numbers and timing haven't changed and you don't want to risk it, I'd strongly urge you to ED NYU. I'm not sure Columbia will be very flattered by the 2nd time EDing with nothing different. Who knows though. You survived to the end of summer on the WL so that's a good indicator that there was something in your app worth liking.muaythaifighter wrote:my wife got a job in nyc and with our kids i do not want to be apart from them since they are only toddlers. plus, we have a pretty good amount of savings in our accounts so i won't be in too much debt.

This, especially if you want NYC.Kabuo wrote:I don't have any advice for your question, but I do have a question for you. Why are you CCN or bust, to the point of EDing and likely paying sticker, when you could potentially get a ton of $$$ at MVP?
