Engineering 3.04/166

Post by adg156 » Sun Aug 14, 2011 5:24 pm

Hey everyone - first post on here!

I just graduated from a T10 Engineering undergrad school (Big Ten) with a 3.04 (both school and LSAC) GPA in Chemical Engineering (arguably the hardest major at my school...average GPA for grads is around a 2.90). I also was diagnosed with ADHD late in college after struggling through it for most of my life not knowing why I had to work so much harder than others at things, so I didn't get on medication until my last semester in school (and I got a 3.50 GPA during my last semester of college while on medication).

I took the June LSAT and got a 166, and would be willing to re-take but only if absolutely necessary as I haven't really done too much LSAT work since June.

My goal is to get into the best school possible with my lower GPA...so I guess you could call me a splitter. (Non-URM)

Looking at - Midwestern schools (Big Ten + Chicago area), but wouldn't mind moving somewhere warmer :).

I'm interested to hear what you all think! Thanks!

Retake. You can pull Northwestern with a 170, UVA with a 170 + Early Decision, and maybe Michigan with a 170+. But Ann Arbor is a whore.

You can check out lawschoolnumbers.com , but you are pretty much 2 points away from getting into most of the splitter friendly schools in the Midwest. I would say give Minnesota a shot, a 168 and you would be in easy, as well as Wisconsin and Iowa. In all honesty though, and I hate to say this as everyone else on TLS does, your best bet for the better schools in the Midwest is to retake.

This.

The whole thing about Engineering being a tough major will have little sway on admissions committees for law schools.

Had almost identical numbers to you last cycle. Was accepted with 42k at Emory and 76k at SMU

Thank you all for the advice!

If I were to re-take - how hard is it to get a waiver (as I have taken it 3 times in 2 years...although one was a cancel)?

And realistically, would anyone (t30) bite with my current score?

Neither are in the Midwest. Also, you are talking about Emory and SMU. Not to blast those schools, but Emory's reputation has been going into the toilet and SMU is not going to do OP a lot of good in the Midwest.

I think you would get accepted into Iowa for sure and a decent chance at Wisconsin. Also, Emory has a "magic wall" at 166 where almost no matter what your GPA is they will accept you.

What about Indiana (Bloomington), Ohio State, and Illinois?

IUB was giving out 120k scholarships to Damn near everyone with a 166 or higher this cycle. But who knows about next cycle.

Northwestern accepts less than 1% straight from undergrad, so definitely get a job using your engineering degree if you haven't already.
