New and Depressing Situation. PLEASE HELP

Post by merlin2009 » Sat Jul 30, 2011 1:29 pm

I know lots of people have been through this, but I took a CC class in high school, thought I dropped it before the deadline, didn't. Because I was paranoid, I actually called and asked. Turned out I got a C. This fucks up my GPA a bit, so here's the situation now:

GPA: 3.74 from Yale, 2.0 from CC. Not sure how that calculates because of the hours and such, but assuming the CC class is a regular class, then it drops to a 3.68.

LSAT: Cancel, 178

Schools: probably would be very sad if I had to go anywhere lower than Columbia. I'm in love with Harvard. Don't care about money.

Any thoughts? I'm trying to get the CC class retroactively dropped--if not, how screwed am I? I talked to a HLS student who suggested that I should write an addendum since I thought I dropped the class and (impressively) got a C without taking the final.

Thanks

Makes no difference, you're below their 25th regardless. Also, prestige whore much?

3.68 versus 3.74 won't make much of a difference. You want to be 3.8/178 for really good shot at H. Maybe HYP undergrad will push you over the top, though.

You'll definitely get Columbia though. That's where all the 175+ in the 3.6-3.8 range go when they can't get into Harvard.

Not screwed, OP. Just be sure to write a detailed addendum about the CC class and how a school ranked lower than Columbia is beneath someone of your caliber. With a PS that showcases your sparkling personality, even Yale is in your reach! Good luck!

Well it has you as admit everywhere but Harvard or Yale, where you are a consider. It doesn't change whether that class is added or not.

However, I would think when it says "consider" that it will come down either way to 1) considerations not captured by numbers ie. your GPA which is hurting you is from Yale, check one 2) your softs, and 3) your application choices. So focus on the things you can still change and that will probably make the difference for you.

Either way, you aren't out of the running and it doesn't seem to matter. Try and get it fixed for the little bump, but don't stress over it. Did you use it for credit at Yale? If not, why would they even calculate it into your undergrad GPA? I think they will only ask for a transcript like that if your Yale transcript shows transfer credits from this community college.

Oh, and write an addendum. And good luck! I hope you land Harvard since you clearly want to be there :)

Oh, and write an addendum.
They have to calculate it into his/her GPA because it was a college course. LSAC clearly states that ALL college courses attempted will be factored in, and ALL transcripts must be sent. If OP fails to send that transcript and they later find out about it OP could potentially be thrown out of school or fail C&F when applying for the bar.

ETA: also you are way nice to go to LSN for the OP.

Ah, I guess I had heard "all classes since high school" and took that to mean, post high-school graduation. I know they asked for my CC transcript (which I didn't even know I had btw since I took the AP courses at my high school), but I figured it was because I used a few credits to opt out of low level courses I wasn't interested in taking. Wow though! They should really be clear with kids in high school that is the case. I am pretty sure no one even mentioned to me that opting to take AP courses over regular courses could affect my law school prospects. Whew whew whew that I took high school seriously. Talk about dodging a bullet you never saw coming.

No... no... MumofCad...

Not AP, which your UG transcript should handle (you simply get CR or something as a grade for that). I mean that some people actually take CC courses in their junior/senior years of HS. I was surprised to find my lab partner at a CC was still in high school (and embarrassed because I had been swearing like a sailor).

Though, I suppose your AP courses could be graded by the local CC... but mine weren't, I just took an exam at the end and applied it to my first UG institution. (interesting note: I later took ENG 101 at another institution where my AP didn't get applied... it was AWFUL. I am so glad I got to skip that at 18 or I probably would've dropped out even sooner from my first UG).

I took CC classes while in HS (and blotched it too, it brought down my GPA a bit). What really sucked though was this girl in one of classes was clearly interested in me, however being a dweeby high schooler in CC classes I was too embarrassed to do anything at risk of her finding out I wasn't even 18 yet.
