3.61 GPA, 159 LSAT

Post by gyndi.mukwano » Thu Jun 16, 2011 4:49 am

I don't think it matters all that much but my undergrad was in engineering. I spent two years working for Lockheed Martin in a Leadership Development Program. I'm now serving in the Peace Corps in Uganda (27 months). War and Peace :)

Schools I'm interested in:
U Texas
UNC
U Washington
U Iowa

I know Texas is probably a big stretch but any thoughts/feedback are appreciated.

I'm not a URM and technically I have residency in Texas.

Although you have good softs, it's not enough to help you out-perform your numbers. If you could improve your LSAT to a 165 you'd have a good chance at all but Texas.

I would recommend retaking. Even if you get into some of those schools (unlikely at Texas), you will probably end up paying sticker. Retake and grab scholly money. Don't 'waste' all your effort that you've put towards maintaining your GPA and those softs.

Out at all of them.

With those numbers, you should be looking in T2 territory.

Out at all of them? Seriously? I don't believe that. I'm at or near the 25th percentile LSAT for a couple of these schools and at or above their median for GPA. I think my softs would push me over the top at one or two at least. I called around and I have residency at both Iowa and Texas, crazy world. I'd like to hear some stronger arguments for "out at all"

However, I think I can do better and scholarship money would be nice. I have decided that I am going to retake. So I thank you guys for the advice. I was scoring anywhere from 158-166 in my practice tests. The LG have gotten harder! Nairobi in October!

You have <50% chance at the schools other than Texas (but still decent shot). For Texas, you are out. This is according to http://www.lawschoolpredictor.com/?page_id=11

LSP certainly doesn't suggest that you are out at all of them.

Retaking is a great idea - good luck! If you could get a 165, you'd be pretty good for all those schools, perhaps even with some $ at UNC, Iowa, and Washington.

If you're at the 25th percentile for one score, you'd need to be at the 75th for the other to have a decent chance. And unfortunately, the LSAT seems to be weighted more heavily than GPA. But, if you score in the upper range of your practice tests next time, your chances will be better.

I'm going to vent out my thoughts on retaking. It's been stressful thinking about it.

I prepared pretty rigorously. Went through Powerscore Bibles for LG and LR and Kaplan practice books. Prepared for a good 4 months beforehand. Took about 16 PTs. Maybe I should have taken more.

My average for the last 10 PTs before test day was 163. I had a 165 on one of the latest released PTs two days before test day. It's so difficult because I can't pin down anything that specifically went wrong on test day. I had flown from Africa to New York 6 days before so jet lag should not have been an issue. I guess I attribute my performance to test day jitters and an unwieldy, challenging games section that I was only 50% in control of. I usually miss no more than 2-3 on this section.

So I'm trying to justify why I think my score will go up in October. I feel a little more relaxed preparing the second time around. And I'm retaking in Kenya which is close by.

Any thoughts on chances at improving score?
