ED to UVA with 3.9, 170?
I am 16* (don't go very high) and 170 with a 3.9* GPA (I disclosed all the numbers that matter).
Can I do better than a late ED to UVA?
How does UVA compare to Penn, Chicago, Boalt, and Michigan (other schools I might get into) in NYC/DC job placement?
How about scholarship opportunities? UVA gives some scholarships to ED's, but how much compared to RD?
I am not usually so unprepared for anything, but I guessed on two games in December and gave up on law school till I got a post New Year 170 surprise. I have drafts of everything, except "Why X" essays, but otherwise, I won't even have my apps out until early next week.

I don't think you should ED to UVA unless you have a strong preference for UVA over other peer schools for some reason. I think you will receive pretty good scholly from some of MVPBDN schools. Compare and possibly negotiate the offers before you decide. UVA might or might not give you scholly if you ED there, but I don't think you should risk not getting any money from them. I know it is getting late in the cycle and you're anxious, but you are in a solid position. Don't give it away with ED.

As a V student, I can tell you this:
Your numbers are competitive for large schollys at most of the T-10 and maybe even YHS if your app is really good. If I were you, I definitely would NOT apply ED to UVA unless it is where you want to be. They give scholarships to ED students, but I don't really know how it works because my numbers were not scholly worthy.
As for UVA in NY, it is pretty dam awesome. People here make so many distinctions between schools that are sort of unheard of in the legal world, coming from Chicago, Penn, UVA, Michigan will impress any lawyer in New York. The alumni network is amazing and reaching out to them has never been a problem and as a 1L, i can tell you that many places in NY have told me to send grades in once i get them for a 1L sa position, which shows that they are at least interested.
For DC, UVA is a powerhouse, but, it is tough to crack. If you are top 20% and you want DC, you can probably get it, but DC is tough everywhere.

OP, wait until next cycle. Get a year (or an extra year) of WE and apply next fall. You'll be a much stronger applicant by 1) having (more) WE, 2) applying early, and 3) applying RD everywhere. You will get offers of $$ from schools, and you will get great acceptances. You are sitting on a goldmine, do not waste it.
UVA is a good school, and if ED were your only chance of getting in, I'd certainly recommend doing it. But if you just wait and apply next cycle, you have a chance of getting into UVA RD, and of getting into other T14s RD, and getting $$$ from them. Locking yourself into one school now without knowing what kind of money they might give you isn't the smart choice.

Can someone explain to me why people are sometimes scared to post their numbers?

Thanks for the advice!
I was under the impression that (most) U.S. law schools don't care much about GPA. I thought my 3.9X, 170 wouldn't be a whole lot different than the 3.6, 170's on these boards who ED there all the time. I'm wrong?

it can reveal your identity. law schools say they are very experienced at being able to link somebody's writing style after reading a PS, and #'s make it evident particularly if you're active in threads of schools you've applied to, and list your state of residency.parsi wrote:Can someone explain to me why people are sometimes scared to post their numbers?
is it possible law schools have better things than find out who TLS posters are? of course, they do. but i'm sure they check the threads much like the front office of sports teams listens to sports talk radio to get the fans' perspective, and market more effectively. it's at least possible, they'll see a post with #'s, a location and certain writing style and think, "hey, is that jim? the splitter we've been debating on. i'm not sure i like that post. deny!"

Re: ED to UVA with 3.9, 170?
For UVA, yes. Applicants ED because they hit the LSAT median but their GPA is below median, or vice versa. UVA admits splitters and reverse-splitters through ED as long as they eclipse one median and the other statistic is at or above its 25th percentile.niederbomb wrote:Thanks for the advice!

You'll probably get NYU and/or Chicago. So I wouldn't ED.
However, if you want UVA, you might want to really think up a strategy if you're not going to ED because you'll likely get YP waitlisted. And from what I hear, they don't really take off the waitlist.

Re: ED to UVA with 3.9, 170?
Got into Penn already. Michigan also. Would've picked P over UVA, so not EDing was a great decision.
I had a serious negative soft, so I expected to get shut out of the T10 without ED. So far, I have, if anything, over performed my numbers, with the exception of a WL at Duke and a lousy UT scholarship.
You really think I will probably get into Chicago? My highest LSAT is 1 point below median. I would be THRILLED to go there, even at sticker.
I'm thinking about EDing THERE next cycle if I get shut out of CNS (no Columbia application, LSAT median too intimidating).

i think you have a good chance since your GPA is so high. one point below LSAT median isn't outrageous with a 3.9niederbomb wrote:Got into Penn already. Michigan also. Would've picked P over UVA, so not EDing was a great decision.

My mistake - it was a UT scholarship letter, nothing from Vandy yet except a superb admissions packet full of brilliant pictures of hot girls (well law school hot anyway) and the Nashville skyline and a nice bound book that I haven't looked at.mr_toad wrote:Wait, you got a Vandy scholly offer already???
Just $9,400/year from UT. Seriously.

It seems like they tapped out the OOS waiver offers relatively quickly...niederbomb wrote:My mistake - it was a UT scholarship letter, nothing from Vandy yet except a superb admissions packet full of brilliant pictures of hot girls (well law school hot anyway) and the Nashville skyline and a nice bound book that I haven't looked at.mr_toad wrote:Wait, you got a Vandy scholly offer already???
