3.58 /174 chances at Columbia/NYU?
Hi, I'm a Canadian coming from a Canadian university (UBC)
3.58(LSAC GPA), strong upward trend (with sub 3.0 first year (low GPA related to a family crisis, pointed out in the PS), with (4.03,and 3.98) third and fourth yr GPA.
174 (second attempt, after a cancel in october.)
very weak softs: (semi-tri lingual (fluent Korean/English, proficient at mandarin) academic scholarships, some club activities, with no leadership position held, some volunteer work: teaching English to immigrant kids for the last 2 yrs, and some w/e during 3 summers as sales/manager at a fashion boutique in Korea. Independent backpack trips throughout Asia (4 months) and Europe(2months) (sporadic volunteer work at a few places in India, but nothing that stands out) and private tutoring throughout univ. (Asian male btw)
assuming average LORs from my profs, and an average PS,
aware that I will be very late (expect to send everything in by Jan. 14th), if this cycle doesn't work out for me, I'm planning to try
again next cycle, most likely ED'ing for one of the two schools.
no real preference, and would greatly appreciate it if someone would tell me how being an international applicant will come into play for my chances at these 2 schools. I read that Columbia's internationals make up 9% of the student body, in contrast to NYU's 3%, does that mean I'd have a better chance at CLS, despite the higher GPA/LSAT median of CLS?
thanks in advance.

I'm not the best person to speak to that because I'm not all that familiar with the ED process, but I think it can give some advantage. Maybe someone with specific NYU and/or Columbia ED-related experience can chime in?

I think you have a very good chance at NYU based on what I have seen so far this cycle. As far as CLS is concerned, I think you have a decent chance. Feel free to PM me in down the road. I have very similar stats (3.6/173) and can let you know how my cycle turns out.
Oh, and I'm RD for both.
