3.1/173 - UVa ED? Suggestions?
3.1 double major phil and econ, big but not a particularly highly regarded state school (think umass, not cal or uva). upward gpa trend after majors switch. gpa addendum.
softs: two semesters as large club president, 16-hr. work weeks (promoted from work-study to part-time status), active in a few other clubs, several semesters working in student government legal office but no real-world WE, solid although not particularly great letters of recommendation
essays are good and flexible. UVa is my top choice so hopefully my essay reflects my strong desire to attend.
other schools I'm considering:
Michigan Early
Northwestern
Georgetown
Cornell
Texas
Vanderbilt
UCLA
...
Chance me please.
EDIT: not a Virginia resident

maybe not at NU b/c of no WE

How can you be so sure? I mean, of course I want to believe this but I thought my really, really sub-par GPA only made it 50/50 at best.Sentry wrote:90%+ submit UVA and enjoy Charlottesville.
Can you give me more details on what they look for (should I hand deliver my application?) and how their ED process works?
Thanks in advance.

Looking at LSN UVA accepts nearly all 3.0+ 170+ ED applicants.

The lone WL is someone from last year who deferred.

I'm confused about what you are asking. If UVa is your first choice, get your application in ED. What is there to talk about? You are almost certainly in.

I'm just nervous and would like to know what to do if rejected, so if it does happen I don't feel completely helpless.Bumi wrote:I'm confused about what you are asking. If UVa is your first choice, get your application in ED. What is there to talk about? You are almost certainly in.

Why do you care? What will you lose if you're rejected ED from UVa, except a little pride? If you get waitlisted (which is the absolute unlikely worst that would happen) you do what I did when it happened to me. Take a weekend to get over it, drink a little, then finalize the rest of your list and get your other applications done.StateSchoolSplitter wrote:I'm just nervous and would like to know what to do if rejected, so if it does happen I don't feel completely helpless.Bumi wrote:I'm confused about what you are asking. You will likely get into UVA ED, but only ED. Some people i feel are being nice. You GPA is lowww. UVA has started rejecting some splitters so i would get your app in ED ASAP. Once you do just relax i think you will be admitted!StateSchoolSplitter wrote:I'm just nervous and would like to know what to do if rejected, so if it does happen I don't feel completely helpless.Bumi wrote:I'm confused about what you are asking. Should I visit the school ASAP and try to schedule time with a Dean?jt1341 wrote:You will likely get into UVA ED, but only ED. Some people i feel are being nice. You GPA is lowww. Why can I be so sure? The LSAT score? The softs? It would help me if you could point to one specific thing that ups my chances, so I know the gpa kills me RD.

UVA is splitter friendly as long as you're above a 3.0 and 170+ and you are 3 points above their median LSAT even if you had a 171 you would get in. Send in your app and get your acceptance after the wk end don't even sweat it it's not a close call even

LSAT score + ED (UVA is - comptvly not that hard to crack ED) + Econ major gives them an excuse to overlook your GPA in light of your LSAT.StateSchoolSplitter wrote:lol tyvmVeyron wrote:Suggestions? Better buy some new pastel polos brah.

Though to be fair, the econ classes *are* what kept my GPA low.

^ If it makes you feel any better, I still look down on you. Still, I said EXCUSE. This way, it just looks like your major was hard (as seems to have truly been the case). If you had a 3.1 in communications from State U and a 173, they might be tempted to conclude you were a slacker.

Re: 3.1/173 - UVa ED? Suggestions?
170 was the cut-off last year, but I'm thinking that this year they might raise it to 171 (I am basing this on nothing except that a couple of 170's have been waitlisted). As a VA resident, though, you have more leeway.Snoring Meatball wrote:I realize that the median is 170, but is 171 a pretty rigid splitter cutoff? I'm confident that I hit 170 on Saturday (I got a 167 in June because I panicked), but I wouldn't bet my firstborn on 171+. I'm 3.1 too, top public, ED, VA resident.

If you get in, it will be becasue you are a VA resident.Snoring Meatball wrote:I realize that the median is 170, but is 171 a pretty rigid splitter cutoff? I assume you know I am not a Virginia resident. Why doesn't Meatball's LSAT just 2 pts below mine (June) offset the fact that I did not attend a top public?Veyron wrote:If you get in, it will be becasue you are a VA resident.Snoring Meatball wrote:I realize that the median is 170, but is 171 a pretty rigid splitter cutoff?
