3.98 172 ED to Columbia Law School (in New York)?
Hi everyone!
I am wondering if I should apply ED to Columbia Law School (CLS) (a private school located in Manhattan) this coming fall. I am uncertain whether the increased chance of admission to CLS would offset the loss of merit aid elsewhere (other law schools).
Thanks!

You already have a pretty decent shot at Columbia with those numbers, why the ED?

I'm not so interested in Chicago/NYU and think I'll be out at the top 3?vespertiliovir wrote:You already have a pretty decent shot at Columbia with those numbers, why the ED?

Stanford may bite, they like GPAs.

You have a decent chance at Harvard with those numbers, and although Y and S is a black hole for everybody Stanford tends to really, really like high GPAs as well.prodigalson wrote:I'm not so interested in Chicago/NYU and think I'll be out at the top 3?vespertiliovir wrote:You already have a pretty decent shot at Columbia with those numbers, why the ED?
Personally if I were you I wouldn't ED so I could try my luck at HYS....

If I desire to work on the Eastern coast, does Stanford (California) > Columbia law school (New York)?vespertiliovir wrote:Stanford may bite, they like GPAs.

We're just ridiculing the fact that you keep acting like there's another Columbia Law School in Iowa or something. Not that there's anything wrong with Iowa.prodigalson wrote:I just want to know what my chances are (according to the internet)?kazu wrote:You have a point. No, no, I see now why you think I'm flaming. The reason I typed the words (New York) after (Columbia) was because that is where it is located. Where I am from people assume the country Colombia is what I mean and fear for my safety.
Forgive the miscommunication, and tell me I pray, what are my chances?

Not necessarily (and I say this as an SLS troll here). If you want NYC biglaw (and, to a lesser extent, just biglaw on the east coast), Columbia is just as good a choice as Stanford. This is particularly true if you have little financial need, and thus won't expect need-based aid at SLS, and if you have no desire to take courses in other departments where Stanford would be renowned, such as the business school.prodigalson wrote:If I desire to work on the Eastern coast, does Stanford (California) > Columbia law school (New York)?vespertiliovir wrote:Stanford may bite, they like GPAs.
Columbia is amazing, and opens a ton of doors. The bottom students at CLS, though, are having a tougher time than the bottom of SLS; I think this has a lot to do with class size, but also that the bottom 25% or so at SLS can bid on NYC, with so many firms wanting a Stanford student and many SLS folks wanting to stay in the Bay Area or head to home markets.
With your numbers, HYS are not out of reach. If you apply early, I'd be shocked were you rejected from Columbia (this coming from someone with worse numbers admitted in CLS' first wave).

You shouldn't ED to Columbia because you have decent chances at Harvard and Stanford.
