A Why X essay can improve your chances, but it still doesn't guarantee they won't yield protect you.

I wrote a Why Michigan essay but not a Why Duke essay, yet I got waitlisted at Michigan and got a 50% tuition scholly at Duke. LOL.

Apply ED!!

Say you will attend if accepted, if the school does not have a formal ED program!!

Other than that, it is a hard thing to do if you are not talking about regional schools where you live. Visiting schools is largely a matter of money and time, something not everyone has. Just going off the website to write a "why X essay" won't be convincing.

Also, it would help if you understood that the reason that people with good numbers are waitlisted or rejected is not ultimately for the purpose of protecting yield. Rather, it is to protect acceptance rate and to get a more predictable population of admits and scholly offers.

Don't apply to schools you have no intention of attending.
