3.2/170
GPA: 3.2
LSAT: 170
Go to UofMichigan undergrad, decent LOR, solid Personal Statement, Econ major.
Would really love to go to UofMichigan Law, planning on to early-decision on UofM.
What are my chances at UofM?
Will also be applying to:
Duke
Northwestern
Penn
Columbia
Cornell
Notre Dame
Georgetown
Virginia
Thanks!

Likely in at Michigan ED. Also likely in at all others on your list if you apply early. With UVA's new extended ED, if Michigan doesn't accept you, you can turn around and ED there.
GPA's probably too low for the T6, so your list is a good solid list. Might consider adding BC and WUSTL as safeties/possibility of $$, otherwise you're good to go.

You don't think that having already attended UofM undergrad hurts my chances? I've heard that this can be detrimental for UG students Applying To the Law School.
Also, what score would I need to crack the Top 6?

Re: 3.2/170
I don't think any score would guarantee you admission in the T6. It's your GPA that holds you back there; you'd probably need some pretty strong softs to overcome the low GPA. I've even seen URMs who have low GPAs and high LSATs get rejected from the T6. You're not in terrible shape with that 3.2, but it's still pretty low.mgoblue21 wrote:Excellent, Thanks Vanwinkle!

You can take a shot at CCN if you want, and you may have a chance, but it's not a great one. Berkeley is almost out for sure, they love high GPAs.
Attending UM might have hurt you, but applying ED will probably help a lot. Besides, like I said, it's not your only shot at ED; if UM rejects you, you can turn around and ED to UVA and still have a strong backup option in that sense.

Definitely not a lock at any top-14 school with those numbers. I have a 3.36 and a 170 and am not expecting to be a lock at any top-14 whatsoever.

I've got a 171 3.2 3.8 and I got dinged at Penn and fully expect to be dinged at Columbia. Also dinged at Michigan but if I had ED'ed then who knows. WL'ed at Duke, GULC, and UVA. Check Duke's LSN, everyone in this range get's WL'ed. Held at Cornell. In at UMN, so ND is prolly a decent bet. NU depends on WE.

Yeah, I made a mistake there. I didn't notice Columbia on this list, which is why I said both "possibly in everywhere on the list" and "out at T6 so don't bother". OP, you're definitely out at Columbia.beef wellington wrote:Really? Likely in at Columbia and Penn?

I think both Michigan and UVA are probably pretty solid with an early ED. He's got enough time to see Michigan's response and then ED to UVA if it's not a good one.
Splitters do a lot better applying early than late.

Forgot to mention I applied in early-to-mid Nov. I agree with the ED strategy, you can add GULC in there too if you want.vanwinkle wrote:Yeah, I made a mistake there. Re: 3.2/170
Much thanks, folks.
I'm planning on applying in 2011, so I'll definitely retake and shoot for a 172, 173.
If I hit 172, 173, can I at least say I have a puncher's chance at all the school's on my list?

Re: 3.2/170
Also, with a 172-173 is there a shot at (some) money at UofM?
Sorry for all the follow-up questions, just wondering exactly how much time I should invest in getting a higher score.

Yeah CLS seems even tougher now, they're not even taking some 3.4/5, 173 ED Applicantsbeef wellington wrote:All but CLS according to LSP.mgoblue21 wrote:Much thanks, folks.

Maybe, but it's not like you'd be an auto-admit so it's nothing to count on. These guys both got a bit of money with numbers in that range but others got dinged or WL'ed.mgoblue21 wrote:Also, with a 172-173 is there a shot at (some) money at UofM?

How much time did you invest in the 170? What was your PT avg?

Re: 3.2/170
this. you'll most likely get into a couple of them, but you can't be sure. I have a 3.5/171 and the way things look I have a chance of getting shut out of the T14. retake if you think you can do better and make sure you write a good PS.reese23 wrote:Definitely not a lock at any top-14 school with those numbers. I was consistently practicing 168 or 167. Highest PT was 172. Hit 170 on gameday, when I was expecting high 160's.

Re: 3.2/170
You basically need a 180 to have a strong shot at Columbia, and even then probably some good story that explains the grades. Your GPA is just not good enough, T6 don't like to take chances on folks with grades that low.mgoblue21 wrote:Much thanks, folks.

Also, you're still a splitter even if you bump up your LSAT a few points. It'll greatly improve your odds of admission at UVA or Mich, but you'll probably still need to ED for your best chance.

Re: 3.2/170
I think you'd need a 177+ to get into CCN. At least that was what I was thinking this cycle. I didn't necessarily think I could pull it off on a retake and didn't want to risk not using ED, so I didn't retake.

Yeah, I wouldn't retake, sounds like you'd likely get a lower score. My score would have been my 3rd best PT, I'm not messing with it.mgoblue21 wrote:I spent about a month and a half studying relatively (for me) intensively--2 hours per day.beef wellington wrote:Maybe, but it's not like you'd be an auto-admit so it's nothing to count on. That 1pt is not as huge as it used to be. There are 3.0-3.1/175+ folks getting held at GULC.nyyankees wrote:fwiw, im ~3.2/169 and im all but guaranteed to get shut out of the t14. That 1pt is huge though, you should be in at gtown
