Yale?

Post by TheWire » Thu Dec 31, 2009 2:55 am

With a 171 and a 3.8, Law school predictor shows "DENY." In your honest opinion is it even at all plausible to be accepted to Yale. Until now, I have been weary of wasting the $75 on an app. However, my high school buddy got in last week with a 172 3.8 so I have renewed inspiration. Any advice?

Do it. Better to know than to wonder.

+1

You're probably not getting in, but if you don't apply you're certainly not getting in.

Spending $75 now is worth the possibility of Yale and all the doors it opens, IMO

Edited for grammar

Admission to Yale seems to totally depend on what you've done with your life and/or where you went to undergrad. If your 171/3.8 comes from Harvard or you've earned a Rhodes you'll be fine, if those numbers are all you've got going for you then the deny is probably what's going to happen. Hell, I'm at 3.9+/176+ with very solid softs and I'm still on pins and needles for Yale.

I'm a 166 and 3.7 from large public school and Yale wrote me a letter inviting me to apply. Granted, it was minority specific, though I'm Asian, which isnt typically considered URM. Stun them and get in.

Just wondering - what do you think got your buddy in?

exactly, i mean his numbers arent great for Yale so there must have been something outstanding about him -- is there something outstanding about you?

Apply -- you never know what will happen. And yes, softs are everything.

My stats are very similar to yours, Weak Consider according to LSP and I don't think I'm going to apply. Depends on your softs though.

my buddy is pretty legit...solid softs, research, very solid undergrad with probably the most difficult undergraduate degree you can attain. Not yale standard gpa, but a 3.8 in his major is, from a peers perspective, pretty damn respectable. In the end, I want to say that i believe yale does the 12 point ranking in their application reviews (talked about in yale profile) and 3 straight people thought he was in the upper quarter of applicants despite being on the ~25% for stats.

I think I can construct a "beefed up" version of my generic app with strong letters of rec from extremely influential doctors/professors. I guess I'm just wondering if my stats(~3.8 171) are actually auto-reject for yale like LSP shows...

IMO if you're >3.8, >170, you're in the running. No one can really chance anyone else at Yale, but you have a good shot. The key is just writing outstanding essays, and hoping that professors appreciate your style. Good luck with your cycle!
